Cytopathology Fellowship
About the Program
The objective of this one-year fellowship is to provide a concentrated experience in diagnostic cytopathology including the interpretation of both aspiration and exfoliative cytologies and the performance of superficial needle aspirations. There are six full-time, ACGME accredited fellowship positions available.
The fellow participates in a number of teaching cytology conferences and can attend a variety of surgical pathology conferences, and must ready a research project for publication under staff supervision.
Supplementation of the gynecologic cytology portion of the program is achieved through a two-week rotation with the Methodist Hospital and a mandatory 400-slide gynecologic cytology study set review.
Immediate assessment of specimen adequacy is made for all aspirations (superficial and deep CT, ultrasound and endoscopic ultrasound). Interaction with surgical pathology and the submission/ interpretation of ancillary tests, such as flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology and image analysis are part of the evaluation of many cytology specimens.
Around 31,000 cases are processed every year, with 75% consisting of non-gynecologic specimens, which includes 11,500 needle aspirations. Biomarker testing, such as immunostaining, FISH, and molecular testing, is conducted on selected specimens (EBUS, FNAs, fluids, etc.).

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
