International Surgical Oncology Fellowship
The Surgical Oncology International Fellowship is a one-year surgical fellowship dedicated to the training of international surgeons on the surgical management of solid tumors. The program will enable the fellow to acquire an advanced body of knowledge and increased level of skill in the practice of surgical oncology.
The mission of the fellowship is to train a select group of surgeons
in multidisciplinary treatment and surgical techniques for the
specialized treatment of these challenging disorders and malignancies.
Upon the completion of the Surgical Oncology International Fellowship,
it is expected that the international fellow will be positioned for
appointment as a faculty member with focused expertise in the practice
of surgical oncology.
Curriculum
The curriculum is divided into two components:
The on-service component will be composed of 10 months of apprenticeship-type rotations with 1-3 surgical oncology, breast surgical oncology, or colorectal surgical oncology faculty. This model provides immersive exposure to the inpatient and outpatient practice for the attending surgeons. In both the clinic and operative environments, the attending will supervise the trainee’s acquisition of skills and progress toward independence. The goal of this progressive increase in responsibility is to provide an advanced independently and potentially be a resource for other faculty as they transition to practice.
The second component of the curriculum focuses on continued academic development. This component will be addressed throughout the 12-month Fellowship with scheduled lectures, grand rounds, journal clubs, multidisciplinary conference, and one-on-one educational sessions with trainees. Specifically, the fellow will participate in the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Core Curriculum and Conference series in which MD Anderson faculty members offer a formal Oncology Core Curriculum Course to all trainees enrolled in graduate medical educational programs. The fellow will also participate in several departmental and institutional conferences. These include the Surgical Oncology bi-monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference, the bi-monthly Surgical Oncology Grand Rounds conference, weekly Surgical Oncology fellows’ conference and Institutional Grand Rounds. In addition, each service in the Department of Surgical Oncology holds a weekly conference to review specific patients or technical issues relevant to their specific discipline.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
