International Surgical Oncology Fellowship
The Soft Tissue and GI International Surgical Oncology Fellowship is a one-year
advanced surgical fellowship dedicated to training surgeons from around the
world in the surgical and multidisciplinary management of complex oncology
patients.
The mission of this program is to train leaders in surgical oncology and foster worldwide collaboration in the care of cancer patients. Trainees will have exposure to a high volume of complex surgical cases with options for personalization of focus within breast, endocrine, HPB, gastrointestinal, peritoneal surface malignancy, melanoma, sarcoma, and colorectal oncology.
Graduates will be prepared to design and conduct clinical research and trials, plan and execute complex operations, lead multidisciplinary teams, and have the confidence and expertise necessary to ascend to leadership positions within their surgical community.
Curriculum
Patient Care and Surgical Skills
Trainees will have 10 months of on-service apprentice-style rotations. This model provides immersive exposure to the inpatient and outpatient practice for attending surgical oncologists. In both the clinic and operative environments, the attending will supervise the trainee's acquisition of technical skills and progress towards operative independence. Surgical skill training is augmented through simulation and wet labs. Fellows have 24-hour access to robotic surgery simulation platforms. Animal and cadaver labs are led by surgical faculty and offer mastery of complex, multi-team minimally-invasive and open abdominal and pelvic dissections in a low-pressure educational environment.
Academic Development
Within the Department of Surgical Oncology, and alongside our Complex General Surgical Oncology, HPB, Endocrine and Colorectal fellows, ISO fellows participate in weekly didactic lectures, case planning conferences, grand rounds, journal clubs, and multidisciplinary tumor boards. Within the greater Division of Surgery, fellows participate in a year-long Clinical Trial Design course. Beyond lectures from experienced faculty that cover clinical trial logistics, budgeting, statistics, ethics, and alternative trial design that culminates fellows have the opportunity to mature a clinical research question into aclinical trial with the help of faculty-led small group sessions. ISO fellows will also participate in the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Core Curriculum and Conference series, in which MD Anderson faculty members offer a formal oncology curriculum to all trainees enrolled in graduate medical education programs. Within their area of interest, ISO fellows will participate in clinical research with the goal of submitting a minimum of one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
