Perioperative Medicine/Onco-Anesthesia Fellowship
The UT MD Anderson Perioperative Medicine and Onco-Anesthesia Fellowship is a one-year, first-of-its-kind program designed to prepare anesthesiologists to become leaders in perioperative medicine and the care of patients undergoing oncologic surgery. Fellows train alongside internationally recognized experts, gain hands-on experience with advanced clinical techniques, and develop the expertise to optimize patient care across the entire perioperative continuum.
Originally established more than a decade ago as the Cancer Anesthesia Fellowship, the program was the first in the world to offer post-residency anesthesiology training dedicated to the care of patients undergoing cancer surgery. Since then, graduates have built successful careers in academic, private, and hybrid practice settings throughout the United States and internationally, with many leading the development of perioperative cancer care programs at their own institutions.
Recognizing the evolving role of anesthesiologists as perioperative physicians, the fellowship expanded in 2025 to become the Perioperative Medicine and Onco-Anesthesia Fellowship. The innovative curriculum combines operating room training with multidisciplinary rotations that enhance the quality, safety, and coordination of surgical care. By integrating advanced education in both perioperative medicine and onco-anesthesia, the fellowship equips graduates to serve as expert consultants and leaders in these rapidly growing subspecialties while continuing UT MD Anderson's tradition of innovation in anesthesiology education.
Letter from the Program Director
Associate Professor
It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the Perioperative Medicine and Onco-anesthesia Fellowship Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. As program director, I consider it a distinct privilege to introduce you to our one-year curriculum, which was created to train graduates of anesthesiology residencies seeking to become perioperative leaders with expertise in the care of patients with cancer.
Our fellowship bridges the gap in knowledge stemming from limited exposure in residency to the broad aspects of perioperative medicine and the intricacies of complex oncologic surgical care. Perioperative medicine has become an emerging subspeciality within the discipline of anesthesiology. Many of the top anesthesiology programs in the country now offer fellowship training in this field. Onco-anesthesia is also a growing field, with multiple programs now established around the world. We at MD Anderson Cancer Center were the pioneers of this field. Our fellowship started over a decade ago. Since then, we have had multiple fellows train with us and go on to have successful careers in academic medicine, as well as private practice.
MD Anderson is a world-renowned hospital, consistently ranked amongst the top hospitals in the country for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report. Our institution not only allows for exposure to a robust clinical curriculum, but also to research experiences and quality improvement initiatives. Our nationally recognized faculty are some of the best clinicians, researchers, and educators in the field. More importantly, they are passionate about being mentors to our fellows, helping our trainees pave the way for their future success. Thank you for considering our program. We look forward to meeting you and potentially having you join our work family.

- Jose Galindo: Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Jose Galindo, M.D., completed his medical education and anesthesiology training in Colombia, where he practiced as an anesthesiologist for 14 years before pursuing fellowship training in the United States. Throughout his career, he was interested in advancing his knowledge in critical care and expanding his ability to care for complex patients. After completing the United States Medical Licensing Examination, he pursued a Critical Care fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. During his training in Houston, he looked for an opportunity to continue developing his expertise in anesthesiology and discovered the Perioperative Medicine and Onco-Anesthesia Fellowship at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center. “When I get back to Colombia, I’ll be the first one to have completed this type of fellowship,” he shared. “I can take the knowledge and experience back with me to help improve care for patients in my country.”Through his fellowship experience at UT MD Anderson, Dr. Galindo has gained exposure to unique clinical cases, advanced resources, and a multidisciplinary approach to caring for patients with complex cancer diagnoses. He values the opportunity to learn from experts in the field while also growing as a physician, researcher, and educator. “The experience is worth it alone to consider a fellowship at UT MD Anderson,” he said. “You have so many resources here and a new way of learning how to do things.” He also credits the fellowship with helping him develop skills beyond clinical care, including exploring research opportunities and learning how to navigate challenging situations while maintaining personal well-being. For international physicians considering fellowship training, he encourages applicants to identify programs that align with their goals. His goal is to return to Colombia and apply the expertise gained at UT MD Anderson to continue improving care for future patients.
- Pedro Furlan Silott: Pedro Furlan Silott, M.D., began his medical journey in Brazil, where he completed medical school and residency training before serving as an attending anesthesiologist at a university hospital trauma center. After gaining experience caring for complex patients and developing an interest in oncology care, he began exploring opportunities to continue his training in the United States. “I was interested in coming to the United States and having access to all of the innovations and resources,” he shared. During his training in Brazil, he heard about UT MD Anderson Cancer Center and its reputation as a leader in cancer care. He reached out to UT MD Anderson and was given the opportunity to participate in an observership in 2024. That experience introduced him to the institution and department team members who encouraged him to apply for a fellowship within Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. He decided to apply for the Perioperative Medicine/Onco-Anesthesia Fellowship program. After being accepted into the program, Dr. Silott gained advanced clinical experience, strengthened his research skills, and developed greater confidence caring for complex patients. He credits the supportive environment, hands-on training, and dedication of the faculty and team members as key parts of his experience. “Everyone is very nice, supportive and willing to help you grow,” he said. He encourages other international physicians who are interested in training in the United States to explore the opportunities available at UT MD Anderson, and to consider the observership route. Following completion of his fellowship, he will continue his training with a pediatric anesthesia fellowship in Richmond, Virginia, with plans to pursue a career as a faculty member. His journey from Brazil to Houston reflects the global impact of UT MD Anderson’s educational programs and the opportunities available for international healthcare workers seeking world-class training.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
