Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center is made up of a talented group of physicians, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and others dedicated to providing the very best anesthesia and pain medicine care for our cancer patients. Our department team focuses on excellence in all areas of our practice, clinical care, research and education.
We provide over 25,000 anesthetics per year. Our research mission continues to grow, and we rank in the top 15 of all anesthesia departments for NIH support. We look forward to the generation of new knowledge that flows from our talented team and are especially pleased with advances being made in pain, neuroscience and proteomics research. We offer clinical and research fellowships in cancer anesthesia for interested physicians-in-training and add a second year of research training for selected pain medicine fellows. In association with affiliated institutions, we currently provide unique training opportunities for resident physicians and SRNAs rotating with our anesthesiology team.
Educational programs
Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine offers three specialized fellowship programs designed to advance the skills and expertise of anesthesiologists.
The purpose of the Advanced Airway Management Fellowship is to provide supervised training to board-certified or board eligible anesthesiologists in the practice of Advance Airway Management. Fellows will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge base and master the most advanced techniques of airway management. After completion of this one-year fellowship training, the individual should be able to manage the most complex and challenging airways. This one-year fellowship program consisting of clinical training, teaching, and research components will prepare future experts to not only serve as valuable resources for enhancing airway safety in clinical practice, but also in the development of airway-related teaching and research for the future.
The Perioperative Medicine and Onco-Anesthesia Fellowship is a one-year program designed to provide specialized training in both perioperative medicine and onco-anesthesia. You'll work alongside leading experts, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge techniques, and become an integral part of a world-renowned team dedicated to improving patient outcomes. With a focus on the continuum of care for surgical patients, particularly those with cancer, the fellowship addresses gaps in traditional residency curricula by offering comprehensive expertise in these growing subspecialties. This combined curriculum equips trainees to become consultants in both fields, meeting the increasing demand for advanced care in these areas.
The Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) Fellowship provides supervised training to board-certified or board-eligible anesthesiologists in the practice of regional anesthesia and acute pain management, in addition to medical consultation for the full spectrum of surgical and invasive procedures in the hospital setting. The goal of this program is to develop expertise in managing acute postoperative pain and utilizing regional anesthesia techniques to optimize perioperative analgesia. This 12-month fellowship will provide significant exposure and training in the management of acute perioperative pain using innovative regional anesthesia techniques, neuraxial anesthesia, implementation of enhanced recovery strategies, including opioid-sparing analgesia, and coordination of perioperative care.
FY25 Department Accomplishments
Clinical
- Clinical growth included the opening of Robot Row, WHA BrachyTherapy, Main IR 6th room daily.
- Fiscal year 2025 also marked substantial growth and achievement for the MD Anderson Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) team in education, professional development and leadership. Program expansion included the integration of Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) and record-setting recruitment efforts through TxANA, AANA, FANA, and Texas Wesleyan. Partnerships with academic institutions also advanced, with two Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) from UTHealth Houston applying under the guidance of the clinical coordinator and preceptor teams. Collaboration with the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) SRNA program will launch student rotations at MD Anderson in 2026.
Education
- In 2023, MD Anderson launched Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), a teleconsulting and telementoring partnership between MD Anderson specialists and providers in rural and underserved communities. In FY25, MD Anderson's Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine department launched Cancer Anesthesia ECHO Indonesia (CAN ECHO). CAN ECHO is a collaborative initiative between Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Indonesia and MD Anderson Cancer Center, aimed at enhancing perioperative care for cancer patients. Each session features case discussions from Indonesia, along with expert-led didactic presentations from MD Anderson, Dharmais, and other collaborating centers.
- The first cohort of the Academic Mentoring Program established with 18 faculty participating.
- The CRNA Program achieved record recruitment, launched the inaugural MD Anderson CRNA Conference, and expanded academic partnerships and clinical capacity and earning national recognition for excellence and leadership.
Research
- Anesthesiology also continues to drive the SMART (Structured Mentorship in Anesthesia Research and Training) Program, which has become a model for faculty research development across DACCPM. Under the leadership of T.J. Gan, M.D., and with guidance from Department Chairs Jose Soliz, M.D., Salahadin Abdi, M.D., Ph.D., and Karen Chen, M.D., the program provides structured one-on-one mentorship in study design, grant writing, regulatory navigation, and manuscript preparation. What began as an Anesthesiology-led initiative has now expanded to include faculty from Critical Care and Pain Medicine, reflecting the department’s broader impact in shaping a culture of scholarship and collaboration across the division. Faculty champions such as Juan Cata, M.D., have been instrumental in supporting mentees and strengthening the program’s reach. Together, the AMP and SMART programs underscore Anesthesiology’s leadership in cultivating mentorship excellence, equipping faculty with the tools, connections, and confidence to advance their academic and research careers in service of patient care and scientific discovery.
