Oncologic Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship
The Thoracic Pathology fellowship program at MD Anderson is a one-year fellowship geared towards training fellows in all aspects of thoracic pathology, with emphasis on neoplastic lung disease. The selected individual will rotate in the clinical service rendering provisional microscopic diagnosis and supervising the gross pathology dictation and sampling of thoracic cases.
The fellow will be responsible for previewing and establishing the diagnosis for each case seen in the department (in house biopsies, resections, referrals and general consults). The fellow will also assist in the gross examination of complex surgical resection specimens, correlate the results of cytogenetics and molecular testing with the final diagnosis of cases, interact with clinical colleagues from Head and Neck Oncology and Thoracic Surgery departments to obtain additional pertinent clinical information, as well as support the multidisciplinary conferences.
In addition, the fellow will be exposed to non-neoplastic pathology, which includes 10-15% of our daily practice. The ranges of non-neoplastic disease include infectious, fibrotic and rejection processes, among other things.

Letter from our Program Director
On behalf of our faculty, Advanced Practice Providers and staff, we are grateful for your interest in our Oncologic Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship. As the program director, it is my pleasure to introduce our program to you and outline the opportunities that training at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center can provide.
At the center of our training program is our faculty. Our department consists of faculty who have trained in colorectal surgery as well as faculty who have trained in complex general surgical oncology. Our faculty is dedicated to providing an immersive learning experience for our fellows to help them continue to develop their medical knowledge, technical skills and research portfolio. We are proud of both our clinical programs and research programs in robotic colorectal surgery, cytoreduction for peritoneal dissemination and exenterative surgery, young onset colorectal cancer, and lateral pelvic lymphadenectomy.
Additionally, we pride ourselves in multidisciplinary care and work closely with our colleagues in medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical pathology. These relationships are critical to designing effective treatment plans for our
patients. These collaborations occur informally on daily basis in clinic, and formally through our weekly multidisciplinary conferences for colorectal cancer and a dedicated rectal cancer conference. As future leaders in the field of colorectal surgical oncology, our fellows engage in these conferences and clinic conversations to ensure a well-rounded education in colorectal cancer care.
While our program is very clinically focused, we also strive to create an environment for ongoing academic development of our fellows. There are opportunities to participate in the full spectrum or research, including clinical research, translational research, large database studies and clinical trial design. Specifically, through the Division of Surgery, our fellows participate in a formal clinical trials course that includes didactics and small group work on developing clinical trial concepts.
Overall, we believe our Oncologic Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship offers a comprehensive training program for both US and international surgical trainees, and we welcome your application. If you have any questions about our program, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Brian K. Bednarski, M.D., MEHP

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
