Hematopathology Fellowship

The Hematopathology department's fellowship program has two components:

The Hematopathology Fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited program, completion of which fulfills the requirements for board certification in hematopathology.

The Advanced Hematopathology Fellowship is a one-year non-accredited program, which is designed to create a solid academic foundation and further improve diagnostic skills.

Fellows benefit dramatically from completion of both programs. As a result, candidates who make a two-year commitment are preferred. However, we do make exceptions and have accepted candidates to complete only the one-year Hematopathology fellowship. Therefore, strong candidates desiring to complete only Hematopathology fellowship are also encouraged to apply.

Each year, the Hematopathology department receives about 18,000 bone marrow specimens and 4,000 lymph node and other tissue specimens. It performs 60,000 cytogenetic tests, 80,000 molecular diagnostic tests, and 18,000 flow cytometry immunophenotypic studies. This volume, combined with about 30 dedicated and experienced faculty members, provides a unique learning environment and opportunities for translational research.

The fellow is expected to become proficient in the clinical and laboratory evaluation of pathologic materials such as blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes. He/she will be expected to obtain knowledge in the use of instruments and equipment required for diagnostic laboratory studies and in the management of a hematology laboratory.

The fellow is expected to improve knowledge and skills in light and fluorescent microscopy, bone marrow biopsy, immunohematology, molecular diagnosis, immunophenotyping and tissue culture techniques, cytogenetics, histochemistry, cytochemistry and immunocytochemistry.

The experience in coagulation includes exposure to procedures used in the coagulation laboratory and clinical training in diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with coagulation disorders.

In addition, the fellow will gain exposure to molecular biology as it pertains to hematologic diseases. Although the program is designed to provide experience and understanding in the special field of hematology, fellows will be encouraged to participate in the other teaching programs of the Divisions of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

How to Apply

Applicants should be physicians who are diplomats of the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology, anatomic pathology only or clinical pathology only, or have met the requirements to take the examination. Fourth-year residents also may apply and use part of the fellowship to satisfy ABP requirements.
