Continuing School During Treatment

If your child is diagnosed with cancer, treatment and appointments may disrupt your child’s regular school routine. The Children’s Cancer Hospital Pediatric Education and Creative Arts Program will help your child stay on grade-level with schooling during treatment.

Qualified educators at the hospital provide services including academic instruction and creative enrichment as well as assistance with school re-entry. In addition, the Adolescent and Young Adult Program offers vocational counseling, college entrance preparation and scholarship assistance to patients.

School options

Programming available to patients includes, but is not limited to the following:

  1. Hospital School
The hospital school is staffed by certified teachers who provide curriculum for inpatients and outpatients (Pre-K – 12).
  2. Homebound School
Homebound schooling is offered through each individual’s school district, giving students at-home instruction based on guidelines set forth by the patient’s State Board of Education.
  3. Homebound School with Hospital School Support
This option, a combination of hospital and homebound schooling, can be arranged with our assistance through your school district.
  4. Virtual School
This is an alternative to community school and allows patients to receive their schooling via the Internet, regardless of location. Instructions and assignments are provided online. Students can also call in and speak with a teacher for assignment assistance.
  5. Creative Arts
Patients may participate in extracurricular activities to promote development of creativity and confidence.
    • Programs offered include:
      • Children’s Art Project (CAP) – exploratory and creative art projects
      • Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) – musical and theatrical activities
