Continuing School During Treatment

Children's Cancer Hospital patients have three options for continuing education:

  1. The M. D. Anderson / Houston Independent School District (HISD) Hospital School - The Children's Cancer Hospital education staff work in collaboration with teachers from the Houston Independent School District to enroll eligible students. Physician consent is required for student enrollment, and students are encouraged to participate in the school program as fully as possible. The M. D. Anderson/HISD Hospital School is an accredited program; therefore, the curriculum, grades and attendance are overseen by the teaching staff.
  2. Homebound Instruction - Homebound services must be requested directly from the patient’s home school and requires the consent of the physician. While inpatient, the homebound student receives instructional support from the Children's Cancer Hospital teachers as needed. M. D. Anderson Educational Counselor–Liaisons are available to assist patients seeking homebound instruction year round.
  3. Community School - With doctor’s approval, a student may continue at his/her home school throughout treatment. The Children's Cancer Hospital Educational Counselors serve as liaisons between the staff, patients, families and schools. Through ongoing communication, classroom visits, advocacy and consultation, the student can continue to successfully participate in school throughout treatment.
  4. English as a Secong Language (ESL) Program - ESL programs help patients learn simple English skills such as nouns, verbs, phrases and medical terminology. Conversational language is the primary focus of this program. Volunteers are utilized to assist students with practicing their spoken English skills.
