Summer Imaging Research Program (SIRP)
The research fellowship program is a 10-week program that offers hands-on experience in imaging clinical research, which will include one or all imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, ultrasound and PET/CT. This fellowship is sponsored by QIAC (Quantitative Imaging Analysis Core).
Students within their first year of medical school or final three years of undergraduate studies are eligible to apply.
Students are matched with a mentor from MD Anderson’s Diagnostic Imaging faculty and will participate in clinical research pertaining to oncology. Participants work with the mentor in an imaging lab or clinic on projects designed by the radiology faculty.

Through the research program, students gain
The program includes the following activities:
- Hands-on investigative scientific research directed by MD Anderson Radiology faculty
- Opportunities for clinical observation in radiology and attendance at multidisciplinary conferences
- Lectures designed to expand students' knowledge of scientific fields and medical disciplines
- End-of-program presentation of research projects
Eligibility and requirements:
- Students within their first two years of medical school or final three years of undergraduate studies are eligible to apply.
- Students will need a letter of reference from their school for enrollment.
- Students must arrange their own housing.
Work Schedule
Interns report to their mentors and come to work at 8 a.m. and leave at 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Interns have the opportunity to attend imaging and multidisciplinary conferences during their internship.
Stipend
SIRP trainees receive a stipend of $6,000 for the 10-week program. The stipend may change based on actual days worked in a week. Students are expected to pay for housing from these funds. Paychecks are issued on the 5th and the 20th of each month, deducting the required federal tax.

- Personal information, including contact information and mailing address
- Transcripts from undergraduate universities and first semester of medical school
- Personal Statement (stating why you would like to do research in cancer imaging)
- Two letters of reference with contact information (one from your dean and one from medical school professor/college professor)
Applications must be completed and submitted before the above deadline. Incomplete applications will be purged after the deadline has passed.
