Anderson Cancer Center offers the most advanced form of radiation treatment available in the Southwest. Proton therapy provides M. D. Anderson radiation oncologists with a new weapon in their arsenal to fight cancer.

The Proton Therapy Center is a 94,000 square foot facility including three treatment rooms with gantries that administer proton beams from 360-degree angles, a fixed-beam treatment room, 16 exam rooms and a simulation suite with positron emission tomography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging for accurate treatment planning. Amenities also include plentiful free parking right outside the Center for convenience and easy access.

The Proton Therapy Center allows M. D. Anderson to offer the complete range of advanced proton therapies and provides research opportunities to maximize the capabilities of proton treatment on a variety of cancers.

The Proton Therapy Center is part of M. D. Anderson’s Red and Charline McCombs Institute for the Early Detection and Treatment of Cancer, six unique centers dedicated to Making Cancer History® through genomics, proteomics, screening, diagnostic imaging and biotechnology.

Patients can be referred to the Proton Therapy Center for cancer treatment.

New Patients

Please complete the Patient Self-Referral form. You will be contacted by a Referral Specialist to collect the additional information required for confirming your appointment. 

Physicians

Please complete the Physician Referral form. A Referral Specialist will contact your office for additional information and then contact your patient to confirm the appointment.

  • The 94,000 square-foot Proton Therapy Center is located just south of the Texas Medical Center at 1840 Old Spanish Trail.

  • Inside the atrium is an inviting waiting area with modern artwork and an open, calming atmosphere for patients and visitors.

  • Your first visit will be with a representative from the radiation business center.

  • Before you receive your first proton therapy treatment, you will have a consult visit with the radiation doctor who will manage your treatment and a radiation oncology nurse.

  • Together, you and your doctor will decide which treatment option is best for you.

  • Before you begin proton therapy, you will undergo a simulation, which is a treatment planning session.

  • All patients at the Proton Therapy Center will participate in clinical trials, so that treatment results can be used to advance the science of proton therapy.

  • You will see your radiation doctor once a week during the course of your treatment. This weekly visit will help your treatment team monitor your progress and help you manage any side effects you may experience.

  • The Proton Therapy Center is the first fully integrated facility in the world. Amenities include a library.
