We understand that paying for care and managing medical bills may be a concern for you and your family. If you cannot afford the cost of your care and you are a Texas resident, UT MD Anderson offers patient financial assistance to help eligible patients. You may speak with your patient access representative or a member of our financial team for more information and assistance.
How Financial Assistance Works
Patient financial assistance is available to patients who meet eligibility criteria based on financial need and other program requirements, including Texas residency. A representative from UT MD Anderson’s financial clearance team can help explain how the program works and whether it may apply to you.
Requesting Financial Assistance
To begin the financial assistance process, request a Patient Financial Assistance application from your patient access or financial clearance representative.

Who may qualify for patient financial assistance?
Patient financial assistance is available to eligible patients based on financial need and other program requirements, including lawful presence in the United States and Texas residency. Eligibility is determined using information provided in the application and supporting documentation.
What documents do I need to prove legal presence in the United States and Texas residency?
Below is a comprehensive list of all required documents that can be provided as proof of citizenship/legal presence and Texas residency. It also includes an “other” document list for documents that may be needed to complete the financial assistance application process. For any questions regarding the acceptable document list, please contact the Financial Clearance Center at 713-792-4322.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Legal Presence (one required)
- U.S. birth certificate
- U.S. passport
- Certificate of Naturalization (Green Card)
- Permanent Resident Card (Minimum of five years as a permanent resident required to be eligible for financial assistance.)
- Application for renewal of expired lawful permanent resident card
- Asylee or refugee:
- Asylee: Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record (with asylee notation) or USCIS Asylum Grant Letter
- Refugee: Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record (with refugee notation) or I-765 Employment Authorization
- Victim of severe trafficking document from the federal government
- I-914 application for T Nonimmigrant status
- Social Security statement with at least 40 qualifying work quarters
Proof of Texas Residence (one required)
- Deed or property tax assessment in applicant’s name
- Lease in applicant’s name
- Non-leasing resident in rental unit: Notarized letter from leaseholder required. (Used when the patient’s name is not on the lease.)
- Non-leasing resident in homestead: Notarized letter from property owner required. (Used when the patient’s name is not on mortgage or deed.)
Texas Residence Indicator (two required)
- Valid Texas driver’s license or identification card with photo
- Texas Voter Registration Card
- Bank statements with Texas address for the six most recent months. If the patient’s spouse has a separate bank account, both the patient and spouse must submit the six most recent months of bank statements.
- Unemployment compensation statement
- SNAP (food stamps) statement with Texas address. If the patient’s spouse has a separate SNAP account, both the patient and spouse must submit a SNAP statement.
- Utility bills in applicant’s name with Texas address (Electric, Natural Gas, Water, Cable)
- Letter/Card of approval or denial from a Texas County Indigent Health Care Benefits program. The document must be dated at least six months before the Patient Financial Assistance application is submitted and must have the patient’s Texas address.
- Notarized letter from Texas employer (on company letterhead) showing dates and location of employment
- Proof of Texas public or private school or university enrollment for past six months

- Texas Workforce Wage & History Report
- Divorce decree
- County Indigent Application results
- If applying for financial assistance for a deceased patient’s estate, a Death Certificate for the patient.

Is patient financial assistance available to patients with insurance?
Patient financial assistance may be available to patients who are uninsured or underinsured and meet eligibility requirements. Applicants are required to cooperate with efforts to determine coverage through other insurance or third-party sources such as Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits, or private insurance.
Does applying for financial assistance affect my care?
Applying for patient financial assistance does not affect your care at UT MD Anderson.
Can I request financial assistance at any time?
You may request information about financial assistance whenever you are concerned about the cost of care, whether before, during, or after treatment.
What happens to my bill while my financial assistance application is being reviewed?
While your application is being reviewed, your financial specialist can explain how your account will be handled. If your application is missing information, UT MD Anderson may send up to two reminders. You may reapply at any time when you have all the required information.
If I receive separate bills for hospital services and physician services, does financial assistance apply to both?
Financial assistance generally applies to charges billed directly by UT MD Anderson. If you receive a separate bill from a physician or provider not billed directly by the hospital, contact that provider’s billing office to discuss available support options.
What if I do not qualify for financial assistance but still cannot afford my bill?
If you do not meet eligibility criteria but remain unable to pay your bill, a financial specialist can discuss other options with you, such as reviewing your insurance coverage or exploring payment plan options.

Your patient access representative or financial specialist can help you understand your financial assistance options, your rights related to billing and assistance programs, and how to follow up if you have concerns during the process.
