The goal of Taking Texas Tobacco Free, represented in some of the active projects listed below, is to promote wellness among Texans by partnering with healthcare organizations to build capacity for system-wide, sustainable initiatives that reduce tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure among employees, patients and visitors.

The HEALTH–FAST Program is a targeted initiative to train talented postdoctoral fellows, early-stage investigators and doctoral scholars with the ultimate goal of recruiting and retaining a strong alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) research workforce that can mitigate ATOD use and the chronic health conditions that result.

The STRONGER Scholars program is a targeted initiative to train talented scholars to address tobacco use amongst their patients and to understand and conduct tobacco-related cancer prevention/health equity research. The two tracks are a 10-week, full time summer program for medical students and those entering medical school in the fall (national catchment) and a 12-month, part time program for social work, counseling psychology and clinical psychology students enrolled in doctoral degree programs in and around Houston, Texas.
