Welcome to the Perelli Laboratory. We are passionate cancer biologists focused on understanding how and why normal cells transform into cancer cells. The Perelli Lab applies principles of evolutionary biology, considering each tumor as an ecosystem where different "species" (cancer cells) fight for survival in a complex environment. We investigate how "selection of the fittest" drives cancer progression and resistance to therapies.
Meet Dr. Perelli
Luigi Perelli, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Cancer Biology, a CPRIT Scholar in cancer research and a certified Italian medical doctor with a Ph.D. in the oncological sciences.
Dr. Perelli’s research program focuses on shedding light on key unsolved topics in cancer biology, including the malignant transformation of ‘normal’ cells and the role of interplay between genotype-phenotype in shaping cancer evolution. His expertise bridges clinical practice and a foundational knowledge of genetics and genomics, and his team leverages cutting edge technologies, including new tools for generating animal models of cancer and genome-tagging technologies coupled with multi-omic technologies.
To date, his discoveries have been published in top-tier scientific journals like Nature, Nature Cancer and Cancer Cell.
