MD Anderson in The Woodlands Brightens Market Street with Pink Lighting in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

MD Anderson News Release 09/26/11

The MD Anderson Regional Care Center in The Woodlands will recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month by lighting Market Street's central park area and surrounding landscape with a soft pink glow from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. on October 13 and 14. The blush lighting will set the mood for the free musical performance on Oct. 13 that is part of Market Street's weekly concert series.

"This will be the second year that the MD Anderson Regional Care Center in The Woodlands has hosted this unique community event that celebrates survivors, reminds us of those who have lost their battle and encourages every woman to be properly screened for breast cancer," says Pamela Schlembach, M.D., a radiation oncologist at the regional care center and associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson.

MD Anderson physicians and staff will be on hand during the Market Street event to pass out free educational materials and pink glow necklaces to spread the light of breast cancer awareness and hope.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. In 2010 an estimated 207,090 new breast cancer cases occurred in women in the United States, and about 2,000 new breast cancer cases in men. As with all cancers, early detection of breast cancer is key to the best outcome.

The MD Anderson Regional Care Center in The Woodlands is located on the campus of St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital. The center provides multidisciplinary care to each patient, bringing together MD Anderson medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, nurse navigators and oncology nurses. Also available on site are pain management specialists, nutritionists, social workers and physical therapists.
