Academy Award® Winner Ryan Bingham Set to Perform

M. D. Anderson News Release 04/15/10

As they have for almost a quarter century, world-class polo players from around the world are preparing for the annual pilgrimage to the Musselman Brothers' Lazy 3 Ranch in Albany, Texas, to ride in Polo on the Prairie, a competition that raises money for The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

This year's tournament is set for May 1and will feature a concert by Ryan Bingham the evening after the competition. The proceeds from Polo on the Prairie will benefit cancer research and patient care programs at M. D. Anderson.

Midland natives Melinda and Henry Musselman, along with Melinda's mother, Mary Anne McCloud, started the charity match 24 years ago. As a member of M. D. Anderson's volunteer advisory board, Henry Musselman sees the positive impact this annual fundraiser makes in the lives of patients and families who have been touched by cancer.

"I know what it's like to lose someone you love to cancer," says Musselman. "And I know firsthand the importance of the outstanding cancer research and patient care M. D. Anderson provides. The journey to Albany each year is quite a feat for so many of these polo players, but year after year they return, and it's their selfless dedication that has made Polo on the Prairie such a substantial success."

Polo on the Prairie offers guests the unique opportunity to see a U.S. Polo Association-sanctioned tournament up close and personal. Immediately following the championship match, guests are served a Texas-style barbecue feast under a football field-size tent followed by a private concert. This year, Academy Award®- winning songwriter Ryan Bingham is set to perform.

Described as a Texas-bred troubadour, Bingham spent his earlier years riding bulls on the highly competitive rodeo circuit around the Midwest and Southwest. His life changed forever one night in a Texas bar when, at the request of friends, he picked up a guitar and performed a few songs. That performance led to a musical career that eventually partnered him with award-winning songwriter T Bone Burnett. The two co-wrote the song "The Weary Kind" for the Fox Searchlight Pictures movie "Crazy Heart" and won the 2010 Academy Award® for best original song.

Following Bingham's performance, fireworks will light up the skies over the Lazy 3 Ranch as the finale of the 2010 Polo on the Prairie festivities.

"Polo on the Prairie is a Texas-size celebration that brings together friends and families for a very special cause," said John Mendelsohn, M.D., president of M. D. Anderson. "It supports groundbreaking cancer research and helps us offer our patients and their families hope for a life free of cancer. We truly are grateful to everyone who supports this wonderful event."
