Renowned Presidential Campaign Duo Headline M. D. Anderson Fundraiser

Mary Matalin and James Carville Come Together to Fight Cancer at "A Conversation With a Living Legend"

In the wake of the nation's historic presidential election, political commentators Mary Matalin and James Carville will put aside their party differences Dec. 9 in Houston to raise funds for cancer research and patient care programs at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Matalin and Carville will be interviewed by veteran ABC News correspondent Sam Donaldson at "A Conversation With a Living Legend" from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Hilton Americas Hotel. The program will be emceed by former Houston news anchor Shara Fryer. The event already has raised more than $350,000 this year.

"We are delighted to welcome such a dynamic couple, especially during this challenging and pivotal moment in our nation's history," said M. D. Anderson President John Mendelsohn, M.D. "The degree of energy and enthusiasm they bring to the political arena is exceptional, and it is matched by our appreciation for their participation. Ms. Matalin and Mr. Carville are graciously volunteering their time to help raise awareness of the problem of cancer and make a difference in the lives of those affected by it. We applaud them for their commitment to push forward our mission to eliminate cancer."

Between them, Matalin and Carville have worked for every president during the past 25 years. Matalin served as deputy campaign manager for President George H.W. Bush's 1992 re-election bid. More recently she served concurrently as assistant to President George W. Bush and counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney. Carville was the chief campaign strategist for President Bill Clinton in 1992. Carville recently joined the faculty of Tulane University in New Orleans, and his first course will be on the 2008 presidential election. Carville plans to bring nationally recognized journalists, politicians and pollsters to speak to students.

The couple appeared numerous times on NBC's "Meet the Press" to discuss the 2008 political campaign, and Carville is a regular contributor to CNN. Among other works, Matalin and Carville co-authored the New York Times bestseller, "All's Fair: Love, War and Running for President."

A Conversation With a Living Legend is chaired by Elyse and Bob Lanier and Courtney and Christopher Sarofim. Patsy and Greg Fourticq, Barbara and Charles Hurwitz, Joan Schnitzer Levy and Irvin Levy, Beth Sanders Moore and Jess Moore serve as honorary chairs.

Since its inception in 1990, A Conversation With a Living Legend in Houston, Dallas and Washington, D.C. has raised more than $8 million for M. D. Anderson's research, patient care and educational initiatives.
Over the years A Conversation With a Living Legend has honored Rudolph W. Giuliani, James A. Baker III, Jack Nicklaus, Colin Powell, Barbara Bush, George H. W. Bush, Nolan Ryan, Lance Armstrong, Norman Schwarzkopf, Margaret Thatcher, Cal Ripken Jr., Carol Burnett, Sherry Lansing and T. Boone Pickens, among others.
