M. D. Anderson Provides Free Skin Cancer Exams on May 10

M. D. Anderson News Release 04/03/08

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center will offer free skin cancer screening exams to the public on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Cancer Prevention Center at 1155 Pressler Street between Bertner and Fannin on the south side of Holcombe Blvd.

Screening exams are offered on a first-come, first-served basis; appointments are not available.

“Skin cancer is not only the most common cancer, but it is also the most preventable and treatable,” said Susan Chon, M.D., assistant professor in the Dermatology Department at M. D. Anderson and coordinator for the city-wide screening event. “Everyone should remember to wear sunscreen daily and avoid the mid-day sun – especially here in Texas,” Chon said.

The screening will include a full-body exam, but participants are not required to undergo the complete exam if it is not desired. People who may need treatment will be referred to a list of area dermatologists. A copy of the screening diagnosis will be given to each participant.

Parking is available in Garage 2, 1151 Holcombe Blvd., at Entrance 6 on Holcombe Blvd. and Richard JV Johnson. From the parking garage, cross Holcombe to the Mays Clinic at Entrance 7, and follow the signs to the second floor of the Cancer Prevention Building. Parking rates vary depending on length of stay ($12 maximum). Payment can be made by cash or credit card.

Physicians in the Houston Dermatological Society will perform the screenings. The American Cancer Society and the American Academy of Dermatology also are sponsoring the event.
