M. D. Anderson News Release 10/08/04

David Brown, M.D., has been named the Edward Rotan Distinguished Professor and chair of anesthesiology and pain medicine at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Brown joined the M. D. Anderson faculty in September from the University of Iowa College of Medicine where he served as professor and chair of the anesthesiology department since 1997.

From 1990 until 1997, Brown served as a professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic, and prior to that, he was as a clinical associate professor at the University of Washington.

Dedicating much of his life to advancing pain management for cancer patients, Brown plans to continue this focus at M. D. Anderson, while assisting faculty in further developing the department’s research program. He will also serve as medical director of the operating rooms.

Brown’s research interests include regional anesthesia, pain medicine, pancreatic cancer pain control and peripheral nerve blocks. Since 2004 he has served as the chair for the Residency Review Committee on Anesthesiology and as President-elect for the Association of University Anesthesiologists. He will continue as a director of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

"Merging anesthesia with pain medicine will allow us to more fully develop the department, further our research interests and give us the opportunity to continually make strides in making life easier and more comfortable for patients with cancer,” Brown said.

Brown earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed his residency at the Wilford Hall United States Air Force Medical Center. He is a diplomate of the American College of Healthcare Executives, past president of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and former editor-in-chief of the journal Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
