M. D. Anderson News Release 12/01/03

When: Tuesday, December 2, 2002
Where: Wyndham Anatole, 2201 Stemmons Freeway; Chantilly Ballroom, 1st floor

A luncheon crowd of more than 1,300 supporters will welcome former Baltimore Oriole great Cal Ripken Jr. and veteran journalist Paula Zahn to an event that has become a tradition for The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. “A Conversation with a Living Legend” has raised $4.6 million for cancer research, prevention, patient care and education in its 14-year history.

One of only seven players in history to generate 400 home runs and 3,000 hits, Ripken also broke Lou Gehrig's previous record for consecutive games played when he played his 2,131game in 1995. He ended his streak in 1998 after playing 2,632 consecutive games. He was American League Rookie of the Year ('82), two-time American League Most Valuable Player ('83,'91), two-time Gold Glove recipient ('91, '92), two-time All-Star Most Valuable Player ('91, '01) and an All-Star 19 times. On September 6, 2003, the eighth anniversary of his 2,131game, Ripken was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame.

Interviewing Ripken will be television broadcast veteran Paula Zahn who began her 24-year career in Dallas.

11:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Event Chair Stacie McDavid and M. D. Anderson President John Mendelsohn, M.D. will be available for photos and brief interviews in the Chantilly Ballroom.

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Multbox and media platform are available at the back of the room. A photography pool will be escorted to the front of the stage during the first seven minutes of the conversation for close-up shots if desired. M. D. Anderson staff will assist with special media requests.

1:30 p.m. - 1:50 p.m.
