M. D. Anderson News Release 6/25/01

Dr. Thomas Brown has been named vice president for international operations at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.  The appointment to this new position recognizes the increasing importance of international patients at M. D. Anderson. In his new role, Dr. Brown will report to Leon Leach, executive vice president, and will focus on international activities. Dr. Brown joined the M. D. Anderson faculty in 1997.

"Important first steps for Dr. Brown will be to refine our strategic vision for international activities and to continue to improve the services we provide for international patients who are treated at M. D. Anderson," says Dr. John Mendelsohn, president of M. D. Anderson. "He will work to ensure the efficient integration of our international patients into the operations of M. D. Anderson, both in Houston and abroad."

Last year, 3,546 international patients received care at M. D. Anderson. More than 1,400 of them were newly registered patients.  "In order to fulfill our institutional mission to advance the cure of cancer in Texas and throughout the world, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center must maintain and further develop its international profile,” says Dr. Brown. “This effort includes development of our ability to serve international patients who come to Houston seeking care, as well as development of patient care, research, and educational collaborations with health care institutions throughout the world.”

One program Dr. Brown will oversee is the International Program, which works with patients from abroad to coordinate appointments, discuss what they should bring with them and answer general questions all in the patients' own languages. Translators in the program's Language Assistance Office are fluent in 11 languages, from French to Turkish to Hakaa. Dr. Brown is fluent in Spanish, having lived in Latin America.

Other programs under Dr. Brown’s leadership include International Business Development, International Marketing, and M. D. Anderson International-España, the institution's first international affiliation, which opened last fall in Madrid, Spain. Dr. Brown serves as medical director of the Spain facility and is a member of its board of directors. He was actively involved in launching this program over the last year.  Dr. Brown served as deputy head of the Division of Medicine for three years before serving as ad interim head of the new Division of Cancer Medicine over the past year. In his clinical work, Dr. Brown has studied the effectiveness of numerous anti-cancer drugs.

Dr. Brown’s administrative qualifications include formal business training, having earned an MBA from Rice University in Houston, where he received recognition as a Jones Scholar. He earned his doctorate from the Medical College of Virginia in 1979.

Dr. Brown will continue his clinical activities in the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology. During a transitional period, he will serve as the associate head of the Division of Cancer Medicine, assisting the new division head, Dr. Waun Ki Hong.
