Influenza Vaccination Campaign

H1N1 (Swine) Flu Vaccine

M. D. Anderson has received a limited supply of H1N1 influenza vaccine. In all, 1,310 doses have arrived, 80% of which have been allocated for employees and 20% for patients.

Employee Health is offering H1N1 vaccination to employees designated as health care workers with direct patient contact who have an increased occupational risk of exposure to H1N1 and/or who work in high-risk patient care areas. This initial offering will include our high-risk patient care areas list used during the seasonal flu shot campaign.

Vaccination Strategy for Employees

During this phase of limited supply of vaccine, Employee Health will follow recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and take a “tiered” approach to vaccine distribution:

Tier 1: Health care and emergency medical services personnel who have direct patient contact:

a. High-risk employees who are at the “point of entry” for initial diagnosis, such as Emergency Center and Pediatrics

b. High-risk patient care areas, such as Leukemia, Lymphoma and Stem Cell Transplant

Refer to the employee vaccination strategy for more details (available internally on the Flu Season intranet site).

Only individuals whose names are on the high-risk patient care list will be offered vaccination at this time.

For patients, the first group that will be targeted for vaccination are patients 6 months to 18 years old on a first-come, first-served basis. Refer to the patient vaccination strategy for more details (available internally on the Flu Season intranet site).

Employees will be updated if and when additional H1N1 vaccine supplies become available.

If you have questions, e-mail H1N1@mdanderson.org.

For the most accurate and up-to-date reports on H1N1, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site at http://www.flu.gov. More information regarding H1N1 influenza vaccine will be communicated as it becomes known.

Seasonal Flu Vaccine

Please note: The seasonal influenza vaccine is formulated to prevent annual flu. It DOES NOT protect against pandemic H1N1 influenza.

This year's seasonal flu vaccination campaign is now over. In all, Employee Health administered more than 11,000 doses of vaccine.
