Grappling with a diagnosis of cancer is challenging enough. Add to this the often debilitating symptoms of disease and treatment side effects, and the challenge becomes overwhelming.
Grappling with a diagnosis of cancer is challenging enough. Add to this the often debilitating symptoms of disease and treatment side effects, and the challenge becomes overwhelming.
MD Anderson's Palliative Care, Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine specialists understand this struggle and are dedicated to relieving the cancer burden for patients and families.
Our inter-disciplinary team includes physicians specializing in supportive care, rehabilitation medicine, and integrative medicine, along with psychologists, counselors, nurses, social workers, dieticians, chaplains, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists and administrative support staff focused solely on strengthening, relieving distress and comforting our patients and their families.
Following a cancer diagnosis and treatment, it is normal for patients to experience burdensome physical symptoms and/or psychological distress from their disease and/or the cancer treatment itself. Sometimes these physical and psychological symptoms require specialized care in conjunction with your primary oncology treatment for the disease. The specialized multidisciplinary team may benefit you and your family throughout your fight against cancer.
Supportive and Palliative Care in West Houston
The Supportive Care group at MD Anderson’s West Houston location provides state-of-the-art pain and symptom control, facilitates patient goal-concordant care, and offers counseling to effectively address the distress/suffering of patients and families.
This service includes all elements of supportive care that is offered at MD Anderson's main campus in the Texas Medical Center. Care is provided by supportive/palliative care-trained physicians, nurses, pharmacists, counselors, MAs and the PSC team.
In addition, the West Houston location has clinic rooms specifically designed to meet the needs of patients in pain/distress. Rooms include a hospital bed, access to oxygen and other resources to help these patients.
This care can be accessed in person or via phone care and virtual visits five days a week. MD Anderson’s on-call pager service can be used to address pain and symptom management, medication refills, schedule changes, and counseling service.
