Infectious Diseases Combined Fellowship Programs
The Department of Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and Employee Health at MD Anderson offers four ID fellowship positions per year in the immunocompromised track as a part of combined Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Programs with the two medical schools in the Texas Medical Center. Two positions are offered through the Division of Infectious Diseases at the McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and two positions are offered through the Section of Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Both programs maximize the strengths of our leading institutions. Trainees are provided with exposure to a broad spectrum of infectious disease problems, and are an integral part of our Infectious Diseases Consult Teams.
The fellowship in most cases is a two-year program, with at least 12 months spent in direct patient care activities to meet the educational requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Fellows in the immunocompromised track devote a significant part of their fellowship to the care of infectious diseases in cancer patients and immunocompromised hosts and also rotate at hospitals affiliated with the McGovern Medical School at UTHSC and BCM.
While at MD Anderson, clinical fellows rotate on our four Infectious Diseases consult services:
- Leukemia
- SCT/Lymphoma (both consult service with very unique infectious complication in immunocompromised cancer patients)
- Solid Tumor Service (including patients with common hospital-acquired infections such as surgical site infection, pneumonia, and others)
- Intensive Care Unit Service
Fellows receive a balanced, structured and scholarly experience in clinical infectious diseases and are exposed to a wide variety of infectious complications and novel antimicrobial therapeutics. During their 6-12 months of research, our fellows receive personal mentoring from our well-recognized faculty members in collaboration with faculty members from UTHSC and Baylor College of Medicine in all aspects of research in the most important areas of infections in cancer, from development of a hypothesis to final publication in a peer-review journal. This period of research can be extended upon request and previous coordination with his or her mentor.
