Sarcoma Medical Oncology Fellowship
The Sarcoma Medical Oncology Fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a one-year clinical training program designed to prepare physicians for specialized careers in sarcoma care, research and academic oncology.
Sarcomas are rare, heterogeneous cancers that require highly specialized expertise for optimal patient outcomes. Standard oncology training often provides limited exposure to sarcoma diagnosis, treatment, multidisciplinary care and research. This fellowship addresses that gap by providing concentrated training in sarcoma medical oncology at one of the nation’s leading cancer centers.
Fellows gain experience in the diagnosis and management of all major sarcoma subtypes, multidisciplinary treatment planning, clinical trial enrollment, translational research and scholarly work. The program is approved by the UT MD Anderson Graduate Medical Education Committee and the Texas Medical Board. It is affiliated with UT MD Anderson’s Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Program Highlights
- One-year sarcoma-focused medical oncology fellowship; optional competitive second year
- Up to two fellows per year
- Outpatient sarcoma clinic experience approximately three to four days per week
- Optional inpatient sarcoma service exposure
- Structured mentorship from nationally and internationally recognized sarcoma faculty
- Completion of an independent research project, with a minimum expectation of one manuscript submission and one abstract submission or publication by the end of the fellowship.
- Participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards, patient care conferences and educational activities
- Participation in at least 80% of the scheduled fellowship year is required for successful completion of the program
Letter from the Program Director
Welcome to the Sarcoma Medical Oncology Fellowship Program at UT MD Anderson.
Sarcomas are among the most complex and diverse malignancies in oncology. Because these tumors are rare and biologically heterogeneous, optimal care requires disease-specific expertise, multidisciplinary collaboration and a strong foundation in clinical and translational research.
Our fellowship was created to train physicians who are committed to becoming future leaders in sarcoma oncology. Fellows work closely with faculty in Sarcoma Medical Oncology, but also have an opportunity to gain exposure and shadow faculty in Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology and Radiology. Through this environment, trainees develop advanced skills in diagnosis, systemic therapy, clinical trial design, translational research and patient-centered care.
The program is intentionally flexible. Each fellow’s training plan is developed around their clinical and research interests, with close mentorship from the program director and faculty. Fellows are expected to contribute meaningfully to research, present their work and prepare a manuscript for peer-reviewed publication.
We are looking for motivated physicians who want to build careers dedicated to improving outcomes for patients with sarcoma. We hope you will consider joining our program.
Sincerely,
Elise Nassif Haddad, M.D., Ph.D.
