Advancing immunotherapy approaches
Enhancing the ability of an individual’s immune system to better fight cancer is the foundation of immunotherapy. This treatment approach results in improved survival outcomes for patients with several cancer types. The prevailing myth that the immune system does not play a role in brain biology has prevented researchers from evaluating whether immunotherapies act on brain cancers. However, preclinical studies at MD Anderson demonstrated that critical immune cells are present in the brain and are able to recognize and attack cancer. With this knowledge, our team is initiating several clinical trials to determine whether immunotherapy is an effective treatment option for glioblastoma patients.
