Goal

The vision of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to enhance the excellence, value, safety and efficiency of our patient care. Focusing on the vision, the Department of Respiratory Care is presenting this symposium on Strategic Practices of Critical Care Medicine.

Target Audience

This symposium should be of interest to physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other allied health professionals involved in critical care medicine, anesthesiology, respiratory care, nursing, and pharmacy.

Educational Objectives

After attending the symposium, participants should be able to

  • Discuss current evidence-based methods in the management and treatment of sepsis;
  • Explain evidence-based methods of managing pain and sleep deprivation;
  • Describe and discuss neo-critical care issues, including ethical concerns and end-of-life care;
  • Discuss how nutritional support optimizes patient outcomes in critical care;
  • Explain the current rationale and approaches for optimal utilization of high frequency ventilation in both pediatric and adult population;
  • Explain both the risks and benefits of invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation;
  • Explain the various methods of obtaining hemodynamic readings, how to effectively interpret waveforms and the challenges associated with invasive monitoring;
  • Explain new modalities in assessing cardiac disease;
  • Discuss ventilator strategies in common disease conditions as well as the benefits and concerns associated with various modes of ventilator support;
  • Recognize new molecular targets in the treatment of cancer.

Evaluation

A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics.

Accreditation/Credit Designation

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 15.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Ethics Credit

The presentations Ethical Concerns in Dealing with Brain Death and Palliative Care Issues in Intensive Care have been designated by The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center for .50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

Nursing

Nursing Continuing Education Contact Hours will be awarded.
The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity meets Type 1 criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements toward relicensure as established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.

Respiratory Therapists

Eight (8) CEU's per day have been approved by the Texas Society for Respiratory Care.

CME Certificates and Attendance Verification Certificates

Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants when an individual departs the symposium. To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a CME Verification Form.

Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.
