Are you a performer at heart? Do you miss the stage and screaming fans? Well, now is your chance to showcase your talent! Patient Guest Relations is looking for volunteers to provide entertainment for guests of the Rotary House. Musicians, singers, dancers, actors - this is for you!
Rotary House schedules performances year-round. We are already seeking volunteers for the holiday season. Past entertainment has included musical presentations, dance performances, magic shows, dance lessons, etc., and we are always open to new ideas.
M. D. Anderson employees and Rotary House guests and staff are welcome to share their gift, or perhaps you know of children or an organization in need of community service hours and bursting with talent? Please let us know.
For more information or to sign up, please contact Patient Guest Relations at 713-794-4750. We look forward to featuring you soon!
Hooked on Harry Sheppard
A local mainstay since he moved to Houston in 1985, Harry Sheppard is a silver-haired septuagenarian known as the vibraphonist with the golden-toned mallets.
Though his distinguished career began in his native Northeast, backing big jazz giants such as Billie Holiday and Benny Goodman, Sheppard has performed in many styles, with both the famous and the not-so. Who else could claim a stint with Barbra Streisand, as well as a guest slot on a CD by Houston blues man Sonny Boy Terry?
This spry elder statesman really shines when he is on his own, either solo or leading a combo. Sheppard never needs much of an excuse to play, and his well-honed enthusiasm is a hoot in any capacity. Pick a night, and he's apt to be on-stage somewhere around town.
On one of his few days off, you can often find Harry Sheppard sharing his musical talents with the patients and guests at Rotary House. It is always a treat to hear him play and he always brings marvelous melodies and a warm, bright smile to our guests. In fact, he enjoys playing at Rotary House so much that he has signed up to share his time with us on almost every Sunday in November.
Make sure not to miss Harry Sheppard and the Magic Xylophone at his next appearance at Rotary House on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. in the Atrium. To learn more about Harry Sheppard and his music, please visit www.harrysheppard.com .
