They are backed by one of the most active research programs in the world, making it possible for us to offer access to more than 150 clinical trials, many not available elsewhere.

Our Diagnostic Approach
Successful leukemia treatment begins with accurate and precise diagnosis. From 5% to 15% of leukemia patients have been misdiagnosed before they come to MD Anderson. Our first step is to evaluate your risk factors and determine if treatment is necessary. If it is, we formulate care guidelines especially for you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.
The Leukemia Center’s specialized pathologists use the latest equipment and technologies, including an on-site full-service hematopathology laboratory and bone marrow aspiration clinic. Because we know your time is valuable – and of the essence when treating some acute leukemias – the Leukemia Center operates a fast-track clinic to help make checkups more efficient. Results for most blood tests can be received within one or two hours.
The expert physicians at the Leukemia Center customize your care to include the most-advanced treatment options including:
- New approaches that may increase your chance for successful treatment
- Investigational agents
- Targeted therapies
- Vaccines that help your body fight disease
- Long-term follow-up of chronic disease
We strive to accomplish as much care as possible on an out-patient basis. If hospitalization is needed, our expert staff is specially trained to take care of any complexities that may arise.
For both in-patients and out-patients, our comprehensive program offers all the services needed to care for leukemia and the side effects of the disease, such as infections and bleeding issues. In addition, we offer several clinical trials of supportive care therapies including antibacterial, fungal and viral agents, as well as transfusions of white blood cells.
And, because we know leukemia affects more than the body, we go beyond treating the disease to provide emotional support for you and your family, including support groups and specially trained physical therapists and therapists.
Our Clinical Trials
MD Anderson is known internationally for developments in the treatment of leukemia. In fact, we have helped pioneer many treatments including decitabine (Dacogen®), dasatinib (Sprycel®), nilotinib (Tasigna®), imatinib mesylate (Gleevec®) and clofarabine (Clolar®).
The Leukemia Center is home to one of the nation’s few prestigious federally funded leukemia SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) programs. This means we can offer a wide range of clinical trials (research studies) for every type of disease. And we bring the latest discoveries to our patients as quickly as possible.
