Children's Art Project graphic (fruit)The Department of Clinical Nutrition strives to promote comprehensive nutrition care for our patients, and cancer-related nutrition education for the public at large.

Our dietitians and dietetic specialists provide nutrition assessment and counseling to our patients and their guests. We work with M. D. Anderson’s medical team to pinpoint opportunities for nutritional intervention or support. Our Food Service Department also promotes optimum nutrition through a unique, hotel-style food service, called "Room Service at Anderson." The service allows patients and their guests to order meals and snacks anytime between 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Our services include education, assessment and counseling in:

  • Cancer prevention
  • Therapeutic diets
  • Nutrition build-up prior to and during therapy
  • Management of treatment side effects
  • Management of specialized feeding regimens like tube feedings and IV parenteral support
  • Nutrition education for patients, families, caregivers and the general public
  • Presentations on nutrition and cancer for other healthcare professionals at M. D. Anderson, proffessional organizations, universities and in the community

Nutrition education is provided by registered, licensed dietitians and dietetic specialists. Dietitians are experts in food and nutrition with extensive training. Many of our dietitians hold master’s degrees and have achieved advanced certification in nutrition support. Dietetic specialists typically hold a bachelor’s degree in nutrition or a related field. Our dietitians are licensed according to criteria set by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians.

We strive to anticipate our patients' needs and exceed their expectations, so they can focus on their health and recovery.
