M. D. Anderson's  Department of Lymphoma and Myeloma consists of 13 physicians, 10 of whom see and treat patients with Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and three who evaluate patients with myeloma.

Our faculty interacts closely with physicians in other departments, including Diagnostic Radiology, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Hematopathology, and Stem Cell Transplantation. This close collaboration assures unsurpassed patient care, from diagnosis to staging to decisions incorporating the best therapy.

In addition to patient care, this group of physicians oversees several clinical trials incorporating new drugs and therapies, combinations of standard drugs given in novel ways, and treatments designed to reduce toxicities for patients with lymphomas and myeloma. Many regimens or drugs first studied in this department have now become standard treatments. Current research topics include:

  • Evaluating the role of rituximab in the treatment of Hodgkin’s disease
  • Intensive management of mantle cell lymphoma
  • A new drug development program that targets specific proteins inside cancer cells while minimizing the toxic effects on normal cells

Laboratory research interests in the Department of Lymphoma and Myeloma focus on work that may eventually impact patient care, including tumor vaccines, interactions of Hodgkin’s disease cells and normal cells, specific viruses which may cause lymphomas, reasons why T-cell lymphoma appears resistant to standard drugs and potential development of new antibodies to treat lymphoma and myeloma. With new discoveries being made every day, our collaboration between laboratory and clinic will result in improved diagnosis and outcome for all patients with lymphomas and myeloma.
