A year ago, I started working at MD Anderson, and every day has been an amazing journey.
I've heard people say that they want to change the world. They want to do something outstanding to make this world better. Well, I get an opportunity to make a difference right here at MD Anderson. I work in the Sterile Processing Department where tools used for surgery are processed. This gives me an opportunity to show my attitude, my strength and my passion -- and make a difference in so many people's lives.
The instruments processed in my department help save so many lives every day. These are the very instruments that help us connect with our patients, doctors and others in the operating room. They help patients get a new life. Being part of this is an amazing feeling.
Staying at the forefront of technology
MD Anderson strives to stay at the forefront of advances in technology. As technology improves, my coworkers and I get to expand our abilities and work on newer and more complex instruments. Our department provides us the training we need to expand our knowledge and skills.
We also get to learn and become proficient in working with tools used in various specialties like neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery. It's a great feeling to grow and mature every day. I love putting my knowledge and new skills into practice.
In my first year here, I've discovered that MD Anderson is a very diverse place. I've met and worked with people from so many different backgrounds. This helps me and my colleagues connect with each other and with patients from other backgrounds. It teaches us to be more tolerant, respectful and understanding toward each other. It also teaches us to accept our differences and respect each other. It teaches us to work independently but still work together as a team.
The diversity here also has taught me to be grateful for and appreciative of the things I have, including the opportunity to work here and to share my love, compassion, expectations and experiences with others I've met at MD Anderson.
Feeling at home at MD Anderson
I've come a long way in my year at MD Anderson, and now it feels like home.
They say that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. And that's what I've done here. My work isn't just about processing instruments. It's about saving lives and working to end cancer.
