The Human Touch in Humanitarian Medical Work

Engaging in medical humanitarian efforts in third-world countries remind doctors why they are doing what they are doing. Mark Zafereo, M.D., a fellow in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center, has made several humanitarian trips. 

Visits such as these are essential since many third-world countries like Tanzania only have eight otolaryngologists for the population of 40 million. Zafereo discusses how the medical team also trains local doctors to perform very simple surgeries. Zafereo says even if you can’t always cure the patient, just showing you care can do a lot of healing.
