Cancer Patient Referral
Patients wishing to obtain an appointment can start the scheduling process by completing the Self-Referral Form.
Physicians who wish to refer a patient can utilize the myMDAnderson for Physicians secure web portal and then get follow-up access to patient reports.
All e-mail referral forms received prior to 2:00 p.m. Central Time will receive a response, either by phone or by e-mail, by 5:00 p.m. Central Time the same business day. Messages received after 2:00 p.m. will be answered by noon the next day of business. Referrals may also be made by phone or fax. The New Patient Referral Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Central Time.
When a Patient Access Specialist contacts you, the following information will be required:
- Name of the patient
- Name of the referring physician, office address, telephone and fax numbers
- Date of diagnosis
- How the diagnosis was made (physical exam, biopsy, other)
- What treatment, if any, has taken place
- Over what time period the treatment has occurred
- Patient’s telephone number
- Patient’s insurance information
A financial assessment will be performed prior to confirming an appointment. Specific medical and pathology reports may also be requested for review before the patient’s first visit.
Patient Access Specialists will work with you or your referring physician to expedite your first appointment. Most patients are first seen in an outpatient clinic rather than being admitted to the hospital.
