Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center/ Methodist Hospital Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program provides a balanced educational program in adult cardiac, general thoracic and pediatric cardiac surgery. The faculty is comprised of MD Anderson's Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Methodist Hospital, and the Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute.
Program Goal
Our goal is to educate residents by expanding their knowledge and technical skills in the treatment of cardiovascular, esophageal, pulmonary and other thoracic diseases. In addition, we seek to instill in the trainee a desire for continued introspection and self-education, open communication between all health care providers, while maintaining a respectful and professional demeanor.
The training program is a two-year curriculum with two training tracks. The first track focuses on general thoracic surgery and the second track focuses on cardiothoracic surgery. Both tracks are two-year programs. We are currently approved to train one individual in each track per year. All candidates must have completed a five-year ACGME accredited general surgery residency training program and be eligible for the American Board of Surgery. Successful candidates are selected through the National Resident Matching Program after applications are reviewed and personal interviews are conducted in Houston.
