Requirements for Application
Applicants for the program must have completed an approved residency in general surgery and be eligible for the qualifying and certifying examinations of the American Board of Surgery by the time they enter the program. They must apply through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP #1004460F0-General Thoracic, NRMP #1004460F1-Cardiovascular, AMA #460-48-13-121). Applicants must submit their applications and required documents through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
International graduates must contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) regarding the process for students and graduates of foreign medical schools. MD Anderson requires international medical graduates to meet requirements for an institutional permit as outlined by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, as well as the documents necessary for a J-1 visa.

- Medical school diploma in its original language, as well as in English (copied and notarized, stating that it is a true copy of the original) Mail diploma to Program.

- ECFMG certificate (copied and notarized; approximately four to six weeks processing)
Completed applications must be submitted by February 1.

The Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Committee will review the applications when complete. Applicants considered for the fellowship program will be invited for a personal interview, providing an opportunity to visit the institution and meet with the thoracic surgery faculty and fellows/residents. It will also allow the thoracic surgery fellows a chance to visit with the applicant and answer any additional questions.
The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery conducts two formal interview sessions each year on Saturdays. At the interview sessions, an introduction and slide presentation is given by the program director. Each applicant will be interviewed by faculty members. The applicants also have an opportunity to visit with the current residents and tour the various hospitals. Before adjourning, a luncheon will be served and the applicants will be able to ask questions.
The Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program provides a diverse operative experience for residents that meet the requirements for the Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS).
Stipends and fringe benefits are administered through MD Anderson. Fellows are appointed at stipend levels reflecting their years of prior training creditable toward board certification in their current specialty. Annual stipends (which are increased periodically) are explained here.
