Thoracic Pathology Fellowship
About the Program
The Thoracic Pathology fellowship program at MD Anderson Cancer Center is a two-year fellowship geared towards training fellows in all aspects of thoracic pathology, with emphasis on neoplastic lung disease. The selected individual will rotate the first year in the clinical service rendering provisional microscopic diagnosis and supervising the gross pathology dictation and sampling of thoracic cases. The fellow will be responsible for previewing and establishing the diagnosis for each case seen in the department (in house biopsies, resections, referrals and general consults). The fellow will also assist in the gross examination of complex surgical resection specimens, correlate the results of cytogenetics and molecular testing with the final diagnosis of cases, interact with clinical colleagues from Head and Neck Oncology and Thoracic Surgery departments to obtain additional pertinent clinical information, as well as support the multidisciplinary conferences. In addition, the fellow will be exposed to non-neoplastic pathology, which includes 10-15% of our daily practice. The ranges of non-neoplastic disease include infectious, fibrotic and rejection processes, among other things.
The second year will be devoted to laboratory translational research. The trainee is expected to participate in different molecular pathology studies with clinicopathologic correlations directed to gain more knowledge in thoracic pathology. These studies are designed to gain experience in molecular pathology laboratory studies of thoracic malignancies to be presented at national and international meetings with the goal of publication in medical journals.
Candidates must be board certified or eligible for certification in anatomic pathology or AP/CP.
