Oncological Neuroradiology/Head & Neck Radiology Fellowship for 2012

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must 1) be board eligible or certified for diagnostic radiology or its foreign equivalent, 2) have completed an ACGME-approved diagnostic neuroradiology 1-year fellowship or its foreign equivalent, 3) have interest in oncologic imaging and research.

Program Description

The Division of Diagnostic Imaging is accepting applications for a second-year fellowship position in oncological neuroradiology.   This educational program is for the neuroradiologist interested in a comprehensive program of imaging brain, spine, head and neck tumors, with a focus on advanced imaging techniques. The fellow rotates on a weekly basis through a wide variety of clinical experiences in the hospital and outpatient settings, attends numerous conferences and participates in research.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center offers a full-service oncologic neuroradiology experience with 16 neuroradiologists. There is a 1.5 T Siemens’ intraoperative magnet, four 3T GE and eleven 1.5T GE magnets with additional small animal magnets available.  There are 17 multi-slice CT scanners within the department including 3 dual source GE scanners.  Additionally, there are 6 PET-CT scanners.  The new Center for Advanced Biomedical Imaging Research (CABIR) allows for true bench-to-clinic research with highly trained medical/ research professionals and dedicated research imaging equipment.  The proprietary PACS allows for unparalleled access to images and patient data, allowing for easy generation of case collections and reports.

MD Anderson is the top-ranked cancer center in the country for several years running.  The Section of Neuroradiology is an integral part of the Brain and Spine Center, which includes a full staff of faculty neuro-oncologists and neurosurgeons. The Brain and Spine Center receives worldwide patient referral, generating unparalleled clinical and radiological experience for the trainee.  The Head and Neck Surgery Department is also a premiere oncologic service that receives national and international referral with over 60-70 new tumor patients presenting in the average week. Such diverse case material provides the fellow with exposure to the full gamut of head and neck imaging from primary diagnosis to surveillance in complex post- treatment cases.

The fellow will work closely with the Neuropathology Department during the case conferences and in the analysis of outside referral cases. The Division of Diagnostic Imaging hosts a top-tier Department of Imaging Physics, with 25 full-time faculty and over 48 trainees and/or graduate students. Close collaboration between neuroradiology and physics affords the fellow experience in the latest advanced imaging techniques, such as perfusion, diffusion tensor, and spectroscopic imaging, among others, and a host of imaging software and platforms.  This results in an unlimited number of research opportunities with many on-going studies.

Goals and Objectives

The objectives of the Oncological Neuroradiology Fellowship are to:

  • Educate and provide experience for trainees in all facets of oncology as it applies to the central nervous system to include MR and CT techniques, functional MRI, diffusion and diffusion tensor MRI, perfusion MR and CT, and MR spectroscopy.  
  • Prepare the next generation of oncological neuroradiologists in providing excellent clinical care and meaningful research.

Criteria for Selection of Trainees

Candidates must have completed at least one-year fellowship in diagnostic neuroradiology or foreign equivalent.

Selection will be supervised by the program director of oncological neuroradiology with the consultation of other faculty members in the section. Materials solicited for review will include a CV, medical school transcripts, residency and fellowship program director’s recommendation, three other letters of reference and a personal statement. Interviews will be required.

Duties and Responsibilities of Trainees

  • Review and interpret cases with an attending neuroradiologist
  • Assist in neuro-interventional cases which include head and neck biopsies, tumor embolization procedures, vertebroplasty /kyphoplasty and other spine procedures
  • Present at resident case conferences and multidisciplinary tumor boards
  • Develop (with faculty assistance) a research project of sufficient quality for journal submission and/or national meeting presentation. To support this effort, the fellow will be given at least one day and up to three days per week of academic time.

A collegial atmosphere exists between the neuroradiology section and its major referral groups (primarily the Brain and Spine Tumor Center and the Department of Head and Neck Surgery), which provides an excellent opportunity for additional learning and research.
