The goal of the Leukemia fellowship program at MD Anderson is to train internists and oncologists in the diagnosis and management of all types of leukemia and myelodysplastic diseases. Our objective is to support education of medical oncology and hematology fellows in clinical research, with the hope of developing a new generation of independent investigators in academic medicine. We aim to provide in-depth clinical training in the diagnosis and management of leukemia and related malignant disorders (MDS, MPN), and to provide clinical and research training in acute leukemia.
The Leukemia Fellowship is a 1-year program, with an optional second year which runs July 1 through June 30.
The program is non-accredited and is recognized by the Texas Medical Board as an approved fellowship program. It is affiliated with the Institutions Hematology/Oncology Fellowship which is accredited by ACGME. The fellowship offers stipend positions which are determined by the trainees post graduate years of experience (PGY level).
First Year Fellows are assigned to 12 months of rotation in the outpatient clinics where they rotate with different faculty. Fellows will also have three 1-month inpatient service rotations. Fellows are expected to carry a minimum one to two clinical research projects that should be presented at a major national or international meeting (ASH, ASCO, etc.) and published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Second Year Fellows (optional) focus on a given disease for their main research project. Fellows will continue outpatient clinic rotations, where they are assigned to faculty according to their primary research interest and chosen path.
Second year fellows will be expected to design a project under the mentorship of a faculty member. By the end of the second year, fellows should complete a formal manuscript or report, and seek publication for his/her research project. Our clinical investigative projects typically consist of a retrospective chart review, a prospective clinical evaluation of a syndrome or abnormality, or the evaluation of a new drug or therapeutic modality.
All fellows are evaluated over the course of their program. Competency evaluations are performed on the required procedures (such as chemotherapy administration, catheter care, and bone marrow biopsy procedures) under the supervision of the attending physician. The fellowship is held to the educational standards of the ACGME by the Graduate Medical Education Committee and approved by the senior vice president for academic affairs.
The Leukemia Fellowship is led by Program Director Jorge Cortes, M.D., and Department Chair Hagop M. Kantarjian, M.D. The program also has a number of premier faculty who contribute to the fellowships success.
Individuals applying for admissions into the Leukemia Fellowship Program must hold either a M.D./D.O. degree or its foreign equivalent along with a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Texas Training Permit, required by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and maintain appropriate visa status. Individuals who are interested in applying must have completed three (3) years of internal medicine training by the start of the program which begins July 1.
How To Apply
Applications are submitted through the DISCOVER online application system. All applications for the July 1, 2014 Academic Year must be received by November 1, 2013. Qualified candidates of interest are contacted by the program for interviews. Leukemia Fellowship candidates must have the documents below prior to being considered.
- Application form: Submit an original application using DISCOVER. Supply all information requested.
- CV (curriculum vitae): A written description of educational background, work experience and related professional accomplishments.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation: Letters must be dated no more than one (1) year prior to the signature date on the application, and must be on letterhead with original signatures. Letters must reflect appointment at the appropriate academic level and must be from persons qualified to comment on your qualifications in a laboratory or research environment, as well as in a patient care setting.
- *Medical school transcripts: Submit official transcripts from all medical schools attended. Transcripts from the school of graduation with transfer credits may not be used in lieu of an official transcript from the original medical school. An official medical school transcript is one that comes directly from the medical school to MD Anderson Cancer Center or from the candidate directly only if received in a sealed envelope with a medical school stamp or official's signature across the seal. We do not accept copies of transcripts, notarized or otherwise.
- Certificates: Include certificates of completion (copies are acceptable) from all graduate medical education (GME) program (residencies and/or fellowships). If you are currently in a GME program but have not yet completed it, submit a Letter of Good Standing* from your program director. Letters of Good Standing must be dated no more than six months prior to the anticipated start date, signed by Program Director, and on company letterhead. The letter should include the applicants current PGY level, dates of enrollment, and specifically state that the applicant is in good standing.
- *Licensure Exam Transcripts: Applicants must pass each step/part/level of an exam within three attempts.
- M.D. (USMLE, NBME, FLEX, SPEX exams): Submit the Federation of State Medical Boards' Examination and Board Action History Report (EBAHR).
- D.O. (NBOME, COMLEX exams): Submit the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME)
- Canadian Medical Graduates who do not have a USMLE transcript may submit the Licentiate of the Medical Council (LMCC) transcript
- *Credential Evaluations: Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada must submit a credential evaluation conducted by an accredited foreign education evaluation agency verifying degree equivalency in the U.S. Download the list of evaluation companies in DISCOVER or visit our Graduate Medical Education website for a list of approved agencies. It is MD Andersons institutional policy that requires degrees used to meet minimum education requirements from universities outside the United States and Canada that must be verified by a professional foreign degree evaluation company. The professional foreign degree evaluation company must verify 1) the bona fides of the foreign university; 2) the equivalency of the degree to the required U.S. degree; and 3) the applicant's attendance at, and graduation from, that university. We will accept a "general evaluation" for this requirement and although we do not endorse any particular agency, SpanTran has been known to have a faster turnaround then some of the other companies. We will accept an electronic copy from the company, if available.
- Translations: Documents in a language other than English (including Latin) must be accompanied by a certified translation
- ECFMG certificate: Graduates of non-U. S. and non-Canadian medical schools must provide a copy of an ECFMG certificate, valid at the program start date.
*Official transcripts, originals, and credential evaluations will be requested of applicants who are being considered for a Fellowship position. For consideration for a Fellowship position, applicants submit USMLE Scores and copies of above documents for an initial review.
