Selective (Head and Neck) Pathology Fellowship

About the Program

The Selective (Head and Neck) Pathology Fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center offers advanced training in oncologic head and neck pathology.

The Head and Neck Section receives approximately 4,500 new cases per year including general and personal consultations. An additional rotation at the UT Dental Branch is required for training in non-oncologic head and neck pathology and odontogenic neoplasia. Clinical responsibilities include handling, reviewing and pathologic diagnosis of complex surgical resection specimens and intra-operative diagnosis.

Fellows also will be responsible for preparing and presenting at the Head and Neck Pathology clinical planning conferences. Attendance, participation and preparation of multidisciplinary and educational conferences are integral components of the fellowship training.

Emphasis will be placed on integrating conventional morphologic assessment with applicable molecular and biomarkers for head and neck tumor diagnosis and biological profiling. Training sets of an extensive collection of salivary, mucosal and rare tumors of the head and neck regions are available. Fellows will be assigned a research project, typically of translational nature, with a faculty member and will be required to submit a written manuscript by the end of the training year.

Upon program completion, fellows are expected to master gross, intra-operative and surgical pathology diagnostic interpretation of both rare and common entities in head and neck pathology, and be familiar with the most up-to-date parameters for pathology reporting including prognostic factors and special studies.
