General Information

Goal/Focus

The ultimate purpose of this conference is to improve the competence of physicians by providing them with cutting-edge information on advances pertaining to management of serious infectious diseases in cancer patients.

Educational Objectives

After participating in the activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the different challenging infections in cancer patients (knowledge)
  • Describe the role of immunity and inflammatory defects in the development of infections in cancer patients (knowledge)
  • Identify the risks associated with the use of immunosuppressive therapies in developing infections (Knowledge, Competence)
  • Integrate the new modalities for the diagnosis of different infections in cancer patients (Knowledge, Competence, Performance)
  • Apply the new strategies in the management of different infections in cancer patients to improve patient outcomes (Knowledge, Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes)
  • Practice proper stewardship of antimicrobial use in order to minimize drug resistance (Knowledge, Competence, Performance)
  • Identify prospective areas for future research in the area of infections in cancer patients (Knowledge)
  • Identify the role of certain infectious organisms in the development of certain cancers (Knowledge)
  • Recognize the role of the environmental health in the development of multidrug resistant infections in cancer patients (Knowledge)
  • Apply the updated guidelines for the management of different infections in cancer patients to improve treatment (Knowledge, Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes)

The course will be of value to Intensivists, Internists, Oncologists, Infectious Disease Specialists, Surgeons, Family Physicians, Infection Control Practitioners, Pharmacists, Nurses and other Healthcare Professionals.

Course Evaluation

A course evaluation will be provided to attendees to allow them an opportunity to comment on the value of the activity content in relation to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status.  Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as identify future educational topics

Accreditation/Credit Designation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Worldwide Institute for Medical Education.  The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 14.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CME Certificates and Attendance Verification Certificates

Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants as they depart the conference.  To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a CME Verification Form.

Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.
