Pharmacy Fellowship in Oncology Research

  1. What is the goal of the fellowship?
    The goal of the Pharmacy Fellowship in Oncology Research Program is to provide fellows the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and abilities to practice in a research focused patient care setting.

  2. How is the fellowship offered?
    The fellowship is a two-year program that is heavily weighted in oncology research. The program allows for tailored instruction for the individual fellow based on interest(s), past experience and time constraints. Program start date is late July annually.

  3. Is participation in any educational training match program required?
    Match program participation is not required.

  4. How many fellow positions are available and what are the requirements?
    There are two fellow positions. A Pharm.D. degree is required and the fellow candidate must have completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency or have an equivalent level of prior experience in pharmacy practice. An on-site interview is also required.

  5. What should I expect at the time of the on-site interview?
    Applicants should be prepared to assume the travel and lodging costs for the interview as MD Anderson does not have a mechanism to provide compensation for the interview. We can assist with coordinating airline and/or hotel arrangements and airport transportation if needed. The interview process entails a full day (7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) of meetings with the program director and program coordinators. A presentation is not required of the candidates during the onsite interview. Interviews are conducted in January and February.

  6. How and when are fellows selected for the fellowship?
    Fellows are selected by the Division of Pharmacy based on multiple factors including their past education and training, performance during the onsite interview and their overall match with the Fellowship Program at MD Anderson.

  7. Does the fellow need to be licensed in the State of Texas?
    Fellows must be eligible for pharmacist licensure in the State of Texas (reciprocity or examination) as soon as accepted into the program. It is mandatory that fellows take any required exams, and obtain licensure prior to starting the program.

  8. What are the "required" experiences and how are the educational experiences offered?
    The fellowship includes educational experiences in laboratory research, clinical services and clinical research. Fellows will have experience with the following:
    • Development of analytical techniques
    • Pre-clinical and clinical research study design
    • Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling
    • Oncology clinical pharmacy practice
    • Clinical research
    • Presentation and publication of scientific data

  9. What expectations are placed on the fellows?
    The fellows are expected to make a commitment to satisfactorily complete all requirements of the program, as planned in advance and agreed upon between the fellow and the program director. This commitment will include attendance at required meetings and programs, and the availability and willingness to participate in any function of the Division of Pharmacy on a 24-hour basis. The fellow is required to complete documentation and evaluation for all activities and experiences and objectives accomplished. Professional pharmacist licensure in the state of Texas is required, as is membership and participation in appropriate professional organizations.
  10. What presentations or publications are expected of the fellow?
    Fellows will be expected to present their project results at the designated conferences specified by the program director. In addition, the fellows are required to participate in assigned projects and make topic presentations for the institution staff, residents, fellows, pharmacists and students. Each fellow is required to present "Pharmacy Grand Rounds" and complete requirements for provisions of continuing pharmacy education credit. Each fellow will complete a writing project for publication and assigned in-services.

  11. How is the fellow evaluated?
    The program at MD Anderson is not based upon a set number of "hours" in each experience area. Rather, it is based upon behavioral plus competency-based objectives covering all the areas of the learning experiences in the program. The fellow is evaluated directly by the preceptor faculty against the pre-assigned learning objectives for each learning experience. Additionally, the fellows evaluate their preceptors and overall program content for each learning experience.

  12. What support is offered for educational trips and seminars?
    Every attempt is made to financially support travel for the fellows to attend relevant educational seminars and programs. Priority programs include the ASHP Midyear Meeting, the Hematology/ Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) meeting, MD Anderson Symposia designated research focused conference(s). Fellows may participate in other meetings/conferences with program director's and division approval. Additionally, fellows are encouraged to attend local and state programs as appropriate.

  13. In what other educational programs does the Division of Pharmacy participate?
    The Division of Pharmacy participates in undergraduate and graduate clinical and experiential programs with affiliated Colleges of Pharmacy. The Division of Pharmacy also offers specialty residencies in Oncology and in Critical Care/ Nutrition Support. The Division of Pharmacy provides in-service and continuing education programs to the institution's professional staff. The Pharmacy Symposium on Cancer Chemotherapy attracts participants nationally and internationally.

  14. What stipend and benefit program is offered?
    The current annual stipend is currently approximately $52,000. The benefits program includes comprehensive health insurance. There is no financial support for moving and living expenses, but relocation information is provided that educational trainees find very beneficial.

  15. What other support is available to fellows during the program?
    The Division of Pharmacy provides laboratory coats and scrubs to the fellows. Designated space is provided for the fellows including individual desks, computers and reference texts. MD Anderson has a Research Medical Library within the institution and the Texas Medical Center has a large medical library within walking distance.

  16. What living arrangements are available for the fellow?
    Houston offers a wide variety of housing opportunities, including many apartments and townhouses near the Texas Medical Center. The University of Texas maintains an apartment complex near the institution for fellows, residents and students. This complex, as well as others, has a regular shuttle service to the institution.

  17. What entertainment and cultural opportunities are available in the Houston area?
    Houston offers every possible opportunity for enjoyment of the arts, entertainment, sports and recreation. The city offers major league sports, outstanding shopping areas and several special attractions such as the Johnson Space Center, Moody Gardens, Toyota Center, Reliant Stadium, Minute Maid Park, Kemah Boardwalk and the beaches of the Texas Gulf Coast.
