Faculty Educator of the Month: February 2008

Dr. Janet E. Price

Dr. Janet E. Price, associate biologist and associate professor in the Department of Cancer Biology and faculty member at The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston (GSBS), has been named the February 2008 Faculty Educator of the Month.

Over the years, Dr. Price has been an instrumental part of the Cancer Biology Program of the GSBS, in which predoctoral fellows receive graduate training in a wide range of topics in the field of cancer biology, such as molecular biology, genetics, radiation physics and immunology. Students are able to receive training in many different laboratories in various departments at MD Anderson and other institutions in and around Houston.

Dr. Price was appointed to the GSBS faculty in 1988. She was a member of the GSBS Admissions Committee from 2000 to 2003 (a committee she chaired from 2002 to 2003) and the GSBS Membership Committee from 2004 to 2005; she began a three-year term as a member of the GSBS M.D./Ph.D. Committee in 2007. Since 1994, except for a brief two-year period, Dr. Price has played a significant role in overseeing the Cancer Biology Program by serving on its Executive Committee. She is the Cancer Biology Program area reviewer for the GSBS Admissions Committee and enjoys meeting with student applicants who come to interview at the GSBS. Dr. Price has directly supervised five students and supervised 11 graduate students in tutorial laboratory experience. In addition, Dr. Price has served on 38 advisory committees, 24 examining committees and 25 supervisory committees for GSBS students. Dr. Price has also supervised the laboratory research of 11 postdoctoral and clinical fellows.

In addition to her Cancer Biology Program and supervisory duties, Dr. Price contributed to educational efforts at MD Anderson by organizing the Cancer Metastasis Research Program Seminar Series from 1999 to 2001.

Dr. Price received her D.Phil. degree from the University of Oxford in Oxford, United Kingdom, in 1984. During her time there, she served as a research assistant in the Nuffield Department of Pathology at John Radcliffe Hospital. She came to MD Anderson in 1984, where she completed one year of training as a Stribling Research Fellow in the Department of Cell Biology.

In 1986, Dr. Price was named assistant biologist and assistant research professor in the Department of Cell Biology (which was renamed the Department of Cancer Biology in 1998). She was promoted to assistant professor in 1987 and her current positions of associate biologist and associate professor in 1993.

While at MD Anderson, Dr. Price has been the principal investigator or a co-principal investigator for more than 15 grant-funded research projects, most of which have dealt with the biology of breast cancer. Also, she is an ad hoc grant reviewer for the Cancer Research Campaign in the United Kingdom and has been the chair of the Program Project Review Committee for the National Cancer Institute of Canada and a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense Breast Cancer Program, American Institute for Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

At present, Dr. Price is a member of the editorial board for the journal Clinical and Experimental Metastasis; she also served on the editorial board for Oncology Reports from 1997 to 1999. Since her time as a graduate student, Dr. Price has authored nearly 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 10 invited articles and numerous abstracts. Finally, Dr. Price and her graduate student, Emily Van Laar, developed the breast cancer cell line database located on the MD Anderson Web site.
