Farhad Ravandi, M.D.
Farhad Ravandi, M.D., Professor in the Department of Leukemia, has been named the August 2012 Faculty Educator of the Month.
In just under a decade as a faculty member at MD Anderson, Dr. Ravandi has been quite active as an educator both in and outside the institution. In particular, he has been a supervisory teacher for a wide array of clinical residents and fellows, several of whom are now on the MD Anderson faculty.
Specifically, since 2003, Dr. Ravandi has mentored several Department of Leukemia fellows as well as trainees in the MD Anderson, Department of Pathology, and transplant fellowship programs and one visiting physician. Also, he has supervised two American Society of Hematology merit award winners and is currently supervising two American Society of Clinical Oncology merit award winners.
Outside of MD Anderson, Dr. Ravandi gave lectures for the undergraduate course Mechanisms in Cancer Therapeutics at Rice University from 1999 to 2010. Furthermore, he was a supervisory teacher for five trainees at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Ravandi also has been an invited presenter at a long list of meetings throughout the world.
Dr. Ravandi received his M.B.B.S. degree from the University of London in 1988. He went on to serve as Senior House Officer and Registrar in Internal Medicine at the University of London from 1988 to 1994.
In 1994, Dr. Ravandi came to Houston, where he completed clinical residencies in Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (1994-1996) and in Hematology/Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine (1996-1997). He then came to MD Anderson, where he completed a clinical fellowship in Hematology/Oncology (1997-1999) and a fellowship in Blood and Marrow Transplantation (1999-2000).
After his second fellowship, Dr. Ravandi joined the faculty of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. While there, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hematology/Oncology, Director of the Leukemia/Hematologic Malignancies Program, and Interim Director of the Stem Cell Transplant Program.
In 2003, Dr. Ravandi returned to MD Anderson when he was named Assistant Professor in the Department of Leukemia. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007 and will be promoted to Professor in September. In addition to his clinical, research, and educational duties, Dr. Ravandi has been a member of MD Anderson Clinical Research Committee II since 2005 and the Sisten Institution Network Funding Program Study Section Review Committee since 2011.
During his time at MD Anderson, Dr. Ravandi has been the principal investigator, a co-investigator, or a consultant for 31 funded research projects. He also has been the principal investigator for 25 funded research protocols. Additionally, he is a co-holder of a patent for use of enzymes engineered to increase prodrug efficacy.
Currently, Dr. Ravandi is the Specialty Chief Editor for the journal Frontiers in Hematology Oncology and is a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Leukemia & Lymphoma. He also serves on the editorial review boards for 6 journals and is a reviewer for 11 journals. Over his career, Dr. Ravandi has authored more than 230 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 15 invited articles, 9 book chapters, and 7 editorials.
