Dr. Suresh K. Reddy
Dr. Suresh K. Reddy, Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship programs, Chief of the Section of Palliative Care, and Professor in the departments of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, has been named the February 2011 Faculty Educator of the Month.
Since 2003, Dr. Reddy has directed the 1-year Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship programs, in which trainees receive comprehensive instruction in all facets of symptom control and palliative care. The fellows participate in activities such as an annual conference covering issues related to end of life, periodic research conferences, weekly “meet the professor” rounds, case presentations, monthly morbidity conferences, weekly grand rounds and mortality conferences, and daily journal clubs. Fellows also take part in 2-month rotations in Houston-area hospices.
Dr. Reddy has also had a wealth of didactic experience, serving as a lecturer, instructor, leader, or organizer for a long list of courses and rounds at MD Anderson. Furthermore, sponsors the Longitudinal Ambulatory Care Experience course at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Reddy’s educational reach extends to supervisory roles, as well. Specifically, he has directly supervised 41 clinical residents and fellows, 2 postdoctoral research fellows, and numerous other fellows, interns, and short-term observers. Additionally, he has taken part in supervisory teaching of 23 trainees at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
Outside MD Anderson, Dr. Reddy has been an in-demand educator. In particular, he has directed and/or lectured in a long list of courses and given presentations at several conferences in Texas as well as India.
Dr. Reddy was honored for his educational contributions in 2001 with the MD Anderson Award for Excellence in Education. He is also a graduate of the Faculty Leadership Academy (2008) and Clinical Safety and Effectiveness Training Program (2010).
Dr. Reddy received his M.B.B.S. degree from Osmania University in Hyderabad, India, in 1982. Afterward, he completed a clinical internship at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad, India, in 1983; a clinical residency in Neuroanesthesia and Cardiac Anesthesia at New York University Medical Center in 1992; a Pain Fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology at The School of Medicine and Dentistry at The University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY, in 1993; and a Symptom Control and Palliative Care Fellowship in the Department of Neuro-Oncology and Anesthesia at MD Anderson in 1996. Furthermore, with his director, Dr. Reddy started the Official Interventional Pain Service in the Department of Anesthesia at MD Anderson in 1994.
During his postgraduate training, Dr. Reddy served as a Senior House Officer at Gandhi Hospital (1983-1984); the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in West Yorkshire, UK (1986); and Rush Green Hospital in Romford, UK (1986-1987). He also was a Senior Registrar at the Royal Infirmary in Blackburn, UK (1987); Victoria Hospital in Blackpool, UK (1987-1990); and Liverpool Maternity Hospital in Liverpool, UK (1990). Finally, he was a Senior Resident at New York University Medical Center in 1991.
In 1992, Dr. Reddy was named an Instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at The School of Medicine and Dentistry at The University of Rochester Medical Center. In 1994, he came to MD Anderson as a Junior Faculty Associate and Chief Fellow in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in the department in 1997. Furthermore, he was named Assistant Professor in the Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine in 2002 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2003 and Professor in 2010.
Dr. Reddy was appointed Director of both the Pain and Symptom Management Fellowship Program and Chronic Pain Service in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in 1997. He went on to become Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship programs in 2003 and Chief of the Section of Palliative Care in 2004.
Currently, Dr. Reddy chairs the Fellowship Selection Committee for the Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine. He also serves on the Graduate Medical Education Internal Review Subcommittee, Continuing Medical Education Advisory Committee, Medical Oncology Fellowship Steering Committee, and Faculty Senate Finance Committee.
Among his many research activities, Dr. Reddy currently is the Core Leader for a 1-year combined fellowship position in the Odyssey Program. In addition, he is an editor for four journals and reviewer for four others. Over the span of his career. Dr. Reddy has authored 25 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 9 invited articles, and 16 book chapters.
