UT MD Anderson presents bold Moon Shots Program at annual educational seminar Dec. 14

Cancer experts from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center return to West Palm Beach Dec. 14 for the institution’s popular Making Cancer History® educational seminar. Attendees will hear from leading researchers about MD Anderson’s unprecedented Moon Shots Program. Launched Sept. 21, 2012, the program aims to rapidly and significantly reduce mortality in several major cancers.

The seminar, in the Cohen Pavilion of the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., begins at 9 a.m. with a breakfast buffet.

Presentations begin at 9:30 a.m., featuring:

  • Ronald A. DePinho, M.D., president of MD Anderson;
  • Christopher J. Logothetis, M.D., chair and professor, Genitourinary Medical Oncology, and co-leader of the Prostate Cancer Moon Shot; and
  • Guillermo Garcia-Manero, M.D., professor, Leukemia, and co-leader of the Leukemia (AML/MDS) Moon Shot.

The two-hour seminar will include a question-and-answer session allowing audience members to ask Drs. DePinho, Logothetis and Garcia-Manero about cancer-related topics.

Since opening in March 1944, almost 950,000 people have registered as MD Anderson patients. From Florida, more than 25,000 people have sought diagnostic treatment or prevention services, including more than 6,000 patients from the Palm Beach area (Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward counties). In Fiscal Year 2013 alone (Sept. 1, 2012-Aug. 31, 2013), more than 340 new patients came from this area.
