A New Complement of Cancer Care

MD Anderson Opens Specialized Surgery Clinic at Memorial City

MD Anderson News Release 02/17/14

HOUSTON -- The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has opened a specialized surgery clinic on the campus of Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, providing West Houston patients with a new level of cancer care and area physicians a new source of collaboration.

Located in the Memorial Hermann Professional Building at 925 Gessner, the 5,000 square-foot clinic is home to an MD Anderson team that includes surgeons specializing in cancers of the breast, lung, esophagus, head and neck, thyroid and skin. Also based in the outpatient clinic will be an MD Anderson urologist, neurosurgeon, reconstructive surgeon, and three gynecologic oncologists. The surgeons are joined by their own teams of MD Anderson midlevel providers and clinical nurses who also specialize in oncology care.

The outpatient clinic includes patient exam rooms, team work areas, a business center and reception lobby.

The surgeons are available to consult with physicians or patients who have a confirmed diagnosis or suspicion of cancer. Each is a member of MD Anderson’s faculty and has completed a post-residency fellowship in their specialty at MD Anderson.

All have been credentialed to do surgery at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, working alongside the hospital’s care teams in the operating and recovery rooms.

“Increasingly, patients opt for cancer care outside the Texas Medical Center (TMC) because they want to stay closer to their home, community, jobs and families. Our expansion into Memorial City provides a growing population in West Houston greater access to specialized expertise and team-based care, of MD Anderson cancer surgeons,” said Peter Pisters, M.D., vice president of MD Anderson’s regional care centers. “Following surgery, patients can continue treatment at Memorial Hermann Memorial City, a hospital well known in the Houston community for its high quality services.”

The following surgeons split their time between MD Anderson in Memorial City and MD Anderson’s Regional Care Center in Katy.

  • Catherine Akay, M.D. breast surgery
  • Jessica Suarez, M.D., breast surgery
  • Kristen Pytynia, M.D., head and neck surgery
  • Boris Sepesi, M.D., thoracic (lung) surgery
  • Sherise Ferguson, M.D., neurosurgery
  • Victor Hassid, M.D., plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • John Papadopoulos, M.D., urology

In addition to the new location in Memorial City, MD Anderson has four regional care centers in the Bay Area (Nassau Bay), Sugar Land,Katy and The Woodlands that provide  medical, surgical and radiation oncology, chemotherapy infusion, pain management, nutrition, lab services and other supportive care. A separate gynecologic oncology clinic operated by the institution is located at Texas Woman’s Hospital in the TMC.
