MD Anderson News Release March 30, 2016
Hundreds of West Texans will head to Albany for the 30th annual Polo on the Prairie, a long-standing fundraiser benefiting The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The festivities will begin with a full day of polo on Saturday, April 30 at the Musselman Brothers’ Lazy 3 Ranch. The championship game kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and will be followed by a private concert featuring country music star Kevin Fowler.
“We’re excited for everyone to get back on the polo field for a good cause,” said Henry Musselman, a longtime member of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Board of Visitors. “When we started this event 30 years ago, we never imagined what a difference we could make.”
Since 1986, thousands of West Texans have come out to support MD Anderson through Polo on the Prairie. Over the past three decades, the fundraiser has generated more than $5.4 million for key cancer research and patient programs at the institution, which is ranked No. 1 for cancer care in the nation.
“Polo on the Prairie is one of the most beloved traditions celebrated by our MD Anderson family,” said Ronald DePinho, M.D., president, MD Anderson. “We’re grateful for the Musselman family and all who attend this Texas-sized event to support the life-saving work of our world-class faculty and staff. Together, we’re Making Cancer History.”
More than 1,000 people are expected to attend. Gates open at 4 p.m. Joe Allen’s Pit Bar-B-Que of Abilene will serve a barbecue dinner chuck-wagon style beginning at 6:30 p.m. Fowler will take the stage shortly after dinner. The evening will conclude with a spectacular fireworks show.
