GOVERNOR'S SUMMER MERIT PROGRAM
The Middle School Camp in Oncology at MD Anderson (MS-COMDA) camp is a one-week program which will be held the week of August 7-11, 2023 that will employ a combination of interactive programmatic career exploration lectures, seminars focusing on Cancer Biology, and laboratory activities to expose students to a breadth of oncologic research spanning from cancer prevention, basic science, translational and clinical research at MD Anderson's state-of-the-art facilities.
The goal of MS-COMDA is to boost student interest in STEM fields, particularly in oncology, by allowing them to learn facts and techniques in a fun way. Science summer camps for middle school students, such as MS-COMDA, provides an environment in which hands-on projects and collaboration with peers and instructors fully engage the students so deep learning can take place.
MS-COMDA 2023 Applications
Applications are now being accepted through May 15, 2023,
Learning Objectives
MS-COMDA offer educational opportunities at an early age to encourage a deeper understanding of STEM principles while inspiring creative thinking. As such, each day of the camp, all MS-COMDA students will start the day together in a large conference room for a group lecture/seminar and activity from 9-11 a.m. A different topic will be addressed each day of the camp, such as cancer prevention, scientific communication, careers in academic medicine, etc. After breaking for lunch, the students will be sent to a different laboratory each day in rotation for observation and hands-on opportunities. These opportunities will allow students to rotate through different labs for observation and hands on experiences and activities at MD Anderson. Throughout the week, these students will not only engage in programmatic career exploration and hands on activities, but also get to tour MD Anderson campus areas.
