MGT Post-Baccalaureate Certificate
The comprehensive certificate program covers essential topics on molecular genetics and techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, amplification methods, sequencing technologies, and analysis tools for detecting and characterizing genetic mutations, infectious agents, and biomarkers associated with diseases. Emphasis is placed on understanding the concepts underlying molecular laboratory techniques, where students gain proficiency in assay composition, result interpretation, and understanding quality control measures essential for accurate and reliable molecular diagnostics in healthcare settings.
Molecular genetic technologists study the role of genetics in medicine, Mendelian genetics, multifactorial inheritance, DNA structure, chromosome structure, population genetics, mutation rates, ethnicity of disease and genetic mapping in a diagnostic setting.
This 100% online program offers flexible enrollment for working professionals, allowing students to take one or two courses per semester and complete the certificate in as little as two semesters or up to two years. Enrolled students may take up to two basic courses in Summer and two advanced courses in Fall. This certificate program is designed for bachelor's level students with an interest in molecular genetics and its application in diagnostic procedures. Students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of molecular genetics, gene regulation and practical techniques used in clinical diagnostics.
Students may apply for admittance to Fall or Spring semesters. See the MGT PBC Program Flyer (pdf).

Mission and Vision
Mission
The mission of the Certificate in Molecular Genetic Technology Program is to train existing laboratory professionals and create competent professionals for the performance of molecular diagnostic testing that will have a positive impact on the prevention and management of genetic diseases.
Vision
The Certificate in Molecular Genetic Technology Program will strive to provide excellence in the academic and clinical training of future professionals while at the same time facilitating compassionate and outstanding patient care.
How to Apply
orAdmissions to the program is competitive and holistic. Meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee acceptance. Students pursuing a certificate in Molecular Genetic Technology enter as a non-degree seeking student. Application and supporting documents must be submitted in applyUTH. Applicants must satisfy the General Requirements for admission as listed in the Admissions section in addition to the following.
- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in allied/clinical health sciences, biology or a related discipline.
- Prior lab experience is strongly recommended.
- A minimum overall and prerequisite GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale is required for admissions.
The Office of the Registrar at UT Health Houston serves as the Registrar for the school.
1. Priority Deadlines
Applicants are highly encouraged to submit the application and all supporting documents by the priority application deadline. Applications and documents received after the priority dates will be considered for admission only if space is available.
To ensure all documents are matched properly, submit your admissions application before submitting your supporting documents accordingly.
Fall Admissions Dec. 1 - April 1
Spring Admissions May 1 - October 1
Summer Admissions Dec. 1 - March 1

3. Application
Apply online to the School of Health Professions. Access the online application form by visiting the Office of the Registrar Make sure to complete the essay question posted on the online application. Pay a non-refundable $65 application fee upon submission of your application.
4. Recommendation Form
Submit recommendation forms from three professional references. SHP does not accept letters of recommendation.
Three professional recommendation forms from a college-level professor, instructor, or a direct laboratory supervisor such as a research lab manager, clinical lab lead, college lab professor or principal investigator. After submitting your admissions application, log into your application portal via applyUTH. Navigate to eForms, then click on the Recommendation Form button. You will need to complete this Recommendation Form three times, once for each reference, by entering their name and email address.
Each reference will receive an email with instructions to submit an electronic recommendation form on your behalf. They will have 14 days to complete it. You’ll be notified by email once each form is submitted.
If a reference does not complete the form within 14 days, you will have the option to select a new reference.
5. College Transcripts
Submit official college transcripts from each school you have attended within the United States. Foreign transcripts are not required. The transcript(s) should show a record of all academic work completed and be sent directly from the corresponding college to the Office of the Registrar. To ensure prompt processing, request that your school sends transcripts using “SPEEDE”. If your school cannot send “SPEEDE” transcripts, colleges may send transcripts in the mail or electronically.
If an email address is required for the submission of the official transcript, please utilize student-admissions@uth.tmc.edu.
Submitted transcripts are considered "official" if the print date is within the previous six months. Visit the Office of the Registrar Academic Transcripts page for more information.
