Community Outreach
Over the past two decades, the Department of Molecular Carcinogenesis has worked to translate basic biomedical research and discoveries to a variety of target audiences. In particular, the department is uniquely qualified to address environmental hazards related to cancer. As an example, after the devastating Bastrop County Complex fire in September 2011, Dr. David Johnson developed a safety information flyer for residents who had to re-enter their fire-damaged homes.
Ongoing community outreach activities include campus tours, speaking to community groups about cancer prevention, and job shadowing for local high school students. Faculty members have also given age-appropriate presentations to local K-12 schools about cancer and other scientific topics.
